Three things most beginner rabbit farmers skip — and then wonder why their first batch struggled.

Before you spend a single shilling on breeding stock, get these right:

1. Housing that controls the basics
Rabbits don't need a mansion. They need a dry floor, proper ventilation, and shade from afternoon heat. A poorly ventilated hutch will cost you more in sick animals than any other mistake you make early.

2. A feeding plan you can actually sustain
Know your feed sources before day one. Pellets, green fodder, water — in that balance, consistently. Inconsistent feeding is one of the top reasons new farmers see poor growth and low conception rates.

3. A market conversation before you have rabbits to sell
This one surprises people. Talk to your buyer, your aggregator, or your training contact before your doe kindles her first litter. Knowing where your rabbits are going keeps you farming with confidence, not panic.

Most new rabbit farmers miss this — and it costs them weeks of wasted time.

Your doe is not ready just because she looks healthy or has reached a certain age. There are 3 clear signs her body is actually telling you she is ready to breed:

1. Her v***a is red or deep pink and slightly swollen. A pale, dry v***a means she is not in heat. Check this first — it takes 5 seconds and saves you a failed mating.

2. She is restless and rubbing her chin on the cage. This is a hormonal behaviour. She is marking territory and signalling readiness. If your doe is usually calm but suddenly restless, pay attention.

3. She accepts the buck without fighting him off. A doe in heat will lift her hindquarters. A doe that is not ready will run, flatten herself, or turn aggressive. Never force a mating — it rarely results in a successful litter and stresses both animals.

Bonus: the best time to introduce your doe to the buck is in the early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Heat stress can suppress reproductive behaviour even in a ready doe.

Check the v***a. Watch the behaviour. Bring her to the buck, not the buck to the doe's cage — the doe in a familiar cage becomes territorial and will reject him.

Here's what to get right before you buy your first doe:

1. Housing first, rabbits second.
Your hutch must be ready, dry, and predator-proof before any animal arrives. A doe stressed by a new environment on day one will perform poorly from day one. Build or set up housing at least a week before stocking.

2. Know what you're feeding her — and why.
Rabbits thrive on quality hay, fresh greens, and a good pellet or formulated feed. The mistake most beginners make is feeding inconsistently or switching feeds too fast. Pick a feeding plan and stick to it from week one.

3. Understand her breeding cycle before she's in your hands.
A doe can be bred from around 4–5 months depending on the breed. If you don't know her cycle, her signs of readiness, and how to introduce a buck safely, you'll miss production windows and wonder why your farm isn't moving.
