Feeding chickens garlic, pawpaw (papaya) leaves, and ginger can provide several natural health benefits. Here’s why each of these is important:

1. Garlic

Boosts Immunity: Garlic has natural antibacterial, antiviral, and antifungal properties, helping prevent infections.

Natural Dewormer: It helps control internal parasites like worms.

Improves Appetite and Digestion: Encourages better feed conversion.

Repels Pests: Its strong smell can help keep mites and lice away when added to water or feed.

2. Pawpaw (Papaya) Leaves

Deworming Agent: Contains papain, an enzyme that kills intestinal worms.

Blood Tonic: Helps in improving red blood cell production and can fight anemia.

Improves Digestion: Aids in breaking down proteins and enhances nutrient absorption.

Anti-inflammatory: Good for overall wellness and recovery from illness.

3. Ginger

Boosts Immunity: Has antioxidant and antimicrobial properties.

Enhances Growth: Studies show ginger can improve weight gain and feed efficiency.

Anti-Stress Agent: Helps reduce stress, especially during transportation or heat.

Natural Antibiotic: Can reduce the need for synthetic antibiotics when used regularly.

How to Use (General Guide)

Garlic: Crush and add to drinking water or mix into feed.

Pawpaw Leaves: Dry and grind or boil to extract juice for drinking water.

Ginger: Powdered form can be mixed with feed or boiled and added to water.

Feeding chickens banana stems is a great idea! Banana stems are rich in fiber, water, and some essential nutrients, making them a good supplement for poultry feed. However, here are some things to keep in mind:

1. Chop or Crush It – Chickens may struggle to eat whole banana stems, so it's best to chop them into small pieces or mash them.

2. Mix with Other Feeds – Since banana stems are high in fiber but low in protein, mixing them with other feeds like grains or legumes ensures balanced nutrition.

3. Feed in Moderation – Too much fiber can cause digestive issues, so offer it as a supplement rather than a staple.

4. Fresh is Best – Use fresh banana stems to avoid mold or fermentation, which could harm the chickens.

Are you already feeding banana stems to your chickens, or are you considering trying it?

HERBS TO USE AS ORGANIC PESTICIDES ON YOUR CROPS

Home-made organic pesticides should always be sprayed on crops during the cool part of the day (mornings or late afternoons) to avoid burning of your crops.

✅Garlic - Crush and mix with hot water- cool for 2hrs, then spray to control aphids.

✅Tithonia (Mexican sunflower) - Crush 2kg of leaves, soak in 4 litres of warm water for 2-3hours or in cold water for 2 days. Spray to control caterpillars.

✅Pawpaw leaves - Take 1 kg of green and fresh leaves, - crush and boil in 4litres of water for 20 minutes. Spray to control scale insects, aphids.

✅Wood ash - Get maize combs, burn them and dry the ash. This should be applied around the plants especially the transplanted vegetable seedlings, to control cut worms in fields where cut worms are a problem.

✅Hot pepper - Crush 500 grams of riped hot pepper fruits, mix with 5 litres of water, boil for 20 minutes. Sieve and add another 5 litres of water mixed with 50ml of any mild dish wash (non-detergent) soap - Spray to control ants (termites), aphids, flies, caterpillars.

-It is named after Jozsef Marek
-Caused by alpha herpes virus known as Mareks Disease Virus [MDV] or Gallid alpha herpes virus 2 [GaHV2]

SIGNS AND SYNDROMES
-Asymmetric paralysis of limbs
-Difficulty breathing and dilation of the crop
-Frequent tumours in the skin and skeletal muscles
-Depression, paralysis and death of large numbers of up to 80%
-Infiltration of the iris making it turn grey
-Unequal size of the pupil and blindness
-Round firm lessons of the feather follicles
-The affected birds are more vulnerable to other diseases both parasitic and bacterial

PREVENTION AND CONTROL
-Vaccination is the only known way to prevent the Disease.
-The Vaccine can be administered to day-old chicks through subcutaneous inoculation or by ovo Vaccination when the eggs are transferred from the incubator to the hatcher.

It is advisable to give antibiotics to prevent infections and multivitamins to boost their immune.

INFECTIOUS CORYZA

Infectious Coryza is usually acute and sometimes chronic, highly infectious disease of chickens, occasionally pheasants and guinea-fowl.
It is a bacterial disease characterised by catarrhal inflammation of the upper respiratory tract, especially nasal and sinus mucosae.

- The disease may be complicated due to secondary infections.
Morbidity is high but mortality low if uncomplicated, although it may be up to 20%.

- The route of infection is conjunctival or nasal with an incubation period of 1-3 days followed by rapid onset of the disease over a 2-3 day period with the whole flock affected within 10 days. The carrier transmission is via exudates and by direct contact. It is not egg-transmitted.

- The bacterium survives 2-3 days outside the bird but is easily killed by heat, drying and disinfectants. Intercurrent respiratory viral and bacterial infections are predisposing factors.

Signs
- Facial swelling.
- Purulent ocular and nasal discharge.
- Swollen wattles.
- Sneezing.
- Dyspnoea.
- Loss in condition.
- Drop in egg production of 10-40%.
- Lack of appetite.

TREATMENT
- Gently squeeze the swollen eyes to remove the white substance then apply Propeta drops or any other antibiotic eye drops in the eyes or wash with salt water solution.

- Administer antibiotics like Tylodoxy 200, Tylosin and preferably ESB3 30% in water for five to seven days.

The best prevention method is by vaccination at the age of 5 to six weeks.

MYCOPLASMA GALLISEPTICUM

- Also known as Chronic Respiratory Disease or Infectious Sinusitis or Mycoplasmosis.
- It affects large number of chickens worldwide causing large economic losses.
- It mostly affects nasal passages, sinus and trachea.
In severe acute disease, infection may also involve the bronchi, air sacs and occasionally lungs.

Can be confused with Infectious Coryza.

TREATMENT

The disease can be combated by use of antibiotics Penicillins and Ampicillins either Administered through mixing in food or water or by injection.

Transmission is either vertical or horizontal.
Prevention can be by obtaining chicks from Mycoplasma gallisepticum free hatcheries.
A commercial recombinant Fowl Pox- m gallisepticum vaccine is also used to prevent the disease.
