Based on the article, the 0.8% Tea Export Levy is creating several negative effects for Kenyan tea farmers, both directly and indirectly.
Effects of the Tea Export Levy on Kenyan Farmers
1. Lower Demand for Kenyan Tea
The levy increases the cost of Kenyan tea in international markets.
Buyers are shifting to cheaper tea from Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi and other competitors.
2. Reduced demand means less tea is sold at the auction.
More Unsold Tea at Mombasa Auction
The article reports that about 27% of tea offered for sale remained unsold, one of the highest levels this year.
When tea remains unsold, farmers ultimately suffer because their produce does not generate income promptly.
3. Reduced Tea Prices
As buyers seek cheaper alternatives, pressure is placed on Kenyan tea prices.
Lower auction prices translate into lower earnings for factories and eventually lower farmer payments.

Delayed sales affect factory cash flow, making it harder to pay farmers on time and invest in operations.
6. Increased Financial Burden Along the Value Chain
Exporters must pay the levy upfront before export.
These additional costs are often passed down through the tea value chain, eventually affecting farmer returns.
7. Discouragement of Tea Farming
If farmers consistently receive lower earnings, some may reduce investment in their tea fields.
This can lead to lower productivity and quality over time.
