Some sick goats don’t cough, collapse, or stop eating immediately.

3 SIGNS FARMERS OFTEN MISS:

1️⃣ Standing away from the herd
A goat that suddenly isolates itself or becomes unusually quiet deserves attention.
2️⃣ Changes in rumination
Healthy goats regularly chew their cud while resting. A noticeable reduction can be an early warning sign.
3️⃣ A change in posture or movement
Head down, hunched posture, reluctance to move, or unusual standing can signal that something isn't right.

Don't only check your goats when they look seriously sick.
Daily observation helps you spot changes early.

Healthy herds start with observant farmers.

UNDERSTANDING PHENOTYPE IN GOATS

Phenotype is what you can see and measure in a goat, shaped by the interaction between its genetics (genotype) and environment.

It includes traits such as:

● Coat colour & pattern
● Body size & conformation
● Horned or naturally polled
● Ear shape & length
● Growth rate
● Fertility & kidding ability
● Milk production
● Disease resistance or susceptibility

Simple way to remember it:
GENETICS + ENVIRONMENT = PHENOTYPE
