HOW TO DISCERN GOOD GENETICS WHEN SCOUTING FOR A COW đ
Farmers, not every cow you see is worth your money. Good genetics is the foundation of a profitable dairy enterprise. Before you buy, train your eye to look beyond body size and color.
Hereâs how to identify a cow with strong genetic potential:
1. Look at the Pedigree (Background Matters) A good cow comes from a proven lineage. Ask about:
Motherâs milk production
Father (bull) used â was it AI or natural service?
Farm records (if available)
Good genetics are inherited, not guessed.
2. Udder Structure is Key A high-quality dairy cow should have:
A well-attached udder (not hanging loosely)
Evenly placed teats
Strong suspensory ligament
A poor udder today means problems tomorrow.
3. Body Conformation (Dairy Character) Forget fat cows. Look for:
A wedge-shaped body (wide at the back, narrow at the front)
Prominent ribs (indicating good feed intake capacity)
Sharp, lean appearance (true dairy character)
Milk comes from feed efficiency, not fat.
4. Frame and Capacity A good cow should have:
Deep body (room for rumen development)
Strong legs and feet (for longevity)
Wide pelvis (important for calving ease)
Weak structure = short productive life.
5. Temperament Matters A calm cow is easier to manage and usually produces better. Avoid nervous, aggressive animals.
6. Milk Records Donât Lie If possible, insist on:
Previous lactation records
Daily yield tracking
No records? Be cautious.
7. Observe the Offspring (If Available) If she has calved before:
Look at the calfâs growth and health
Good genetics reflect in offspring performance
FINAL WORD Buying a cow blindly is gambling. Buying with knowledge is investing.
As farmers, letâs shift from âbuying cowsâ to selecting genetics.
Good genetics + proper feeding + management = PROFITS.
