HOW TO DISCERN GOOD GENETICS WHEN SCOUTING FOR A COW 🐄
Farmers, not every cow you see is worth your money. Good genetics is the foundation of a profitable dairy enterprise. Before you buy, train your eye to look beyond body size and color.
Here’s how to identify a cow with strong genetic potential:
1. Look at the Pedigree (Background Matters) A good cow comes from a proven lineage. Ask about:
Mother’s milk production
Father (bull) used – was it AI or natural service?
Farm records (if available)
Good genetics are inherited, not guessed.
2. Udder Structure is Key A high-quality dairy cow should have:
A well-attached udder (not hanging loosely)
Evenly placed teats
Strong suspensory ligament
A poor udder today means problems tomorrow.
3. Body Conformation (Dairy Character) Forget fat cows. Look for:
A wedge-shaped body (wide at the back, narrow at the front)
Prominent ribs (indicating good feed intake capacity)
Sharp, lean appearance (true dairy character)
Milk comes from feed efficiency, not fat.
4. Frame and Capacity A good cow should have:
Deep body (room for rumen development)
Strong legs and feet (for longevity)
Wide pelvis (important for calving ease)
Weak structure = short productive life.
5. Temperament Matters A calm cow is easier to manage and usually produces better. Avoid nervous, aggressive animals.
6. Milk Records Don’t Lie If possible, insist on:
Previous lactation records
Daily yield tracking
No records? Be cautious.
7. Observe the Offspring (If Available) If she has calved before:
Look at the calf’s growth and health
Good genetics reflect in offspring performance
FINAL WORD Buying a cow blindly is gambling. Buying with knowledge is investing.
As farmers, let’s shift from “buying cows” to selecting genetics.
Good genetics + proper feeding + management = PROFITS.

JERSEY COW

Jersey cows, originating from the Island of Jersey, are small, gentle dairy cattle known for producing exceptionally rich, creamy milk with high butterfat and protein, ideal for cheese and butter making, while also being efficient, hardy, and adaptable to various climates, making them popular globally for their quality milk and lower feed needs. They feature a light brown coat, large expressive eyes, and a calm temperament, though they are known for high butterfat milk, which requires careful management for milk yield compared to larger breeds.

Key Characteristics

Milk Quality: High butterfat (around 4.5%) and protein content, richer in calcium and minerals, giving milk a yellowish tint.

Size & Appearance: Small stature, fawn to dark brown color, lighter muzzle, dark switch (tail), and black hooves.

Temperament: Docile, calm, and easy to handle, making them good for small farms, but can be slightly more nervous.

Efficiency: Excellent feed conversion, requiring less feed for milk production than larger breeds, with good heat tolerance.

Hardiness: Hardy, with strong black hooves that resist lameness, and adaptable to different climates.

Benefits for Dairy Farming

Profitability: High milk solids (fat/protein) command better prices in some markets, increasing profitability.

Lower Costs: Smaller size means lower housing and feed costs.

Sustainability: Efficient feed use and adaptability make them environmentally friendly, suitable for organic farming.

Management & Production

Production Cycle: Mature cows can produce up to 28 liters (about 7 gallons) of milk daily, though yields vary.

Maturity: Reach milking age and start producing at a younger age than some other breeds.

Health: Generally healthy, but prone to milk fever (hypocalcemia) and can have delicate calves in cold weather.

The Girolando
The Girolando is a productive hybrid dairy cattle breed developed in Brazil by crossing the high-milk-yielding Holstein with the hardy, tropical-adapted Gir (Zebu) breed. This breed is renowned for combining high milk production with resilience to hot climates and resistance to tropical diseases and parasites.

Key Characteristics

Origin: Developed in Brazil, the Girolando is responsible for approximately 80% of that country's milk production.

Genetic Makeup: The most common and popular composition is 5/8 Holstein and 3/8 Gir, offering an optimal balance of milk yield and adaptability.

Adaptability: It thrives in tropical and semi-arid conditions where purebred Holsteins often struggle with heat stress and diseases.

Milk Production: Under good management, cows can produce daily yields of up to 35 liters or more, with an average lactation yield of around 3,600 kg in 305 days. The milk has a high butterfat content of around 4%.

Physical Traits: They are medium to large in size with strong legs and pigmented skin. Coat colors vary and can be black and white or red and white, often showing some Zebu traits like larger ears or a slight hump.

Reproduction and Longevity: The breed is known for its high fertility, calving ease, and long productive lifespan, with some cows remaining productive for up to 15 years.

Dual Purpose Potential: While primarily a dairy breed, the males can also be raised efficiently for meat production, showing good weight gain potential.

The Girolando is a valuable choice for farmers in tropical regions due to its efficiency and hardiness, making dairy farming more viable in challenging environments.

Calf Feeding Plan

Immediately after birth:
Give the calf 0.5 ltrs of colostrum milk right away. This helps build its immunity.

Day 1 to 3:
Feed the calf 3 to 4 ltrs of colostrum milk daily.

Day 4 to 7:
Feed the calf milk two times a day. Each feeding should be 2.0 to 2.5 ltrs. Start giving clean water.

Week 2:
Continue feeding milk twice a day, 2.5 ltrs each time. Start giving small amounts of calf starter concentrate. Also, give clean water and soft roughage like lucerne or oats.

Week 3:
Same as week 2. Keep feeding 2.5 ltrs of milk twice a day. Continue giving concentrate, water, and roughage.

Week 4 to 6:
Increase milk to 3 ltrs per feeding, still two times a day. Continue with concentrate, water, and roughage.

Week 7:
Reduce milk to 2.5 ltrs per feeding, two times daily. Keep giving concentrate, water, and roughage.

Week 8:
Further reduce milk to 2 ltrs per feeding, two times daily. Continue concentrate, water, and roughage.

Week 7 to 9:
Start weaning by slowly reducing milk to zero. Make sure the calf eats enough concentrate and roughage and
