Hi guys. I will start my post with what I have been up to and why the silence. This year I decided to expand my enterprise. I started by planting maize. For the two or so years I have kept chicken my business has relied heavily on commercial feeds. I have however noticed over time that the production when I make my own feeds is higher and my birds are happier. Even when I don't have all the ingredients adding chenga to the feed makes a lot of difference. So, at the beginning of this year I decided to join the farmers club and grow maize and sunflower. My biggest challenge has been finding land to lease that is not too far from me. Additionally, I expanded my poultry runs and I now have two extra runs with a 2000 capacity each. Hiyo kazi yote plus the existing layers and improved kienyeji and my 9 to 5 makes it hard to have a social media presence.
Now to our topic today, the poultry market trends. For those of us who do layers, the math has not mathed for a while. One bag of feed is 3150 one bag feeds on average 350 birds. Assume only 300 lay that day, one makes 10 trays each tray is 360 which means on that day one makes 3600-3150=450 this is minus the water, the labour etc. Let's now do improved kienyeji. At 3.5 months the kuku is 800. Ideally, utapata buyer abebe at that time. This is a situation that is often impossible. I have friends who refuse to sell but I have those who do and the profit here is not bad. I even have friends who slaughter and deep freeze. My advise is, lose the attachment and hop on the first opportunity. Now on the millionaires club, I have made money in poultry and I have lost money. This game is not easy. I have seen people win, those who go out of the way to participate in the market. Don't sell your chicken to a broker, be the broker. Don't sell your eggs to a retailer, do the retailing. You will not win by getting the bare minimum, go for the big worm. Keep hustling and whatever you do, don't give up
