From seed to harvest, vegetable farming is a testament to patience, skill, and respect for the land. Every row we plant carries lessons from those who came before us and the promise of nourishing generations to come.

Happy new week and good morning from mashambani!

When we think women in agriculture, we probably think of women tilling the farm, if we go far, maybe women working in a lab curating tissue culture or something. However, what if I told you there is more to the role women play in food systems? Lydia Wachira is a vintage baddie and for most of her life, she has been a 'driver'. Not quite the one you are thinking of though. She career? A donkey cart. As an IDP(Internaly Diplaced Person), her youth was spent surviving and rebuilding after ethnic clashes. Building resilience, she learned that farmers will always need help transporting their goods from one place to another. And without the funds to get a car (they were expensive then, they are now) she started with a single donkey. She now has four, but has had more over the years. She speaks donkey. She knows how to spot a strong donkey, a weak one, a sick one and even one that has potential. She has been on speed dial for many people in her area, to transport input, harvest and much more!
All her kids have attended school with proceeds from her business and as she carried my beans across the farm, she said she has no plans to stop soon.
I think she's such a bad ass. Like Dr. Do Little, but for donkeys.

Good morning from mashambani!

This Monday, take pride in being part of the backbone of civilization. The world needs your dedication, your knowledge, and your grit! No one fails and gets back up as quickly as a farmer.
Now go make this week as fruitful as the land you tend.
