THE MOST HARDY POULTRY RANKED FROM TOUGHEST TO MOST DELICATE.

Not all poultry are built the same. Some can survive heat, diseases, and poor feeding better than others. Here’s how I would rank them when it comes to survival power, disease resistance and hardiness.

1.) Guinea fowl
The true survivors! They rarely get sick, feed on insects and grass, and thrive anywhere, can eat snake for lunch and birds of prey are no match for it.

2.) Ducks (especially the Muscovy breed).
Super strong, love water, eat almost anything. They grow well with little feed. The bata wa kienyeji however takes 35 days to hatch eggs as opposed to other duck breeds which take 28 days.

3.)Geese
Graze grass like goats, live long, and cost almost nothing to feed. You don't need dogs in your compound if you have them. You don't mess with these creatures they can embarrass you with their bites which is more painful than that of a mosquito 🦟 😂

4.) Indigenous (kienyeji/ local/village chicken).
Our local heroes. They are as tough as nails.Very disease-resistant and perfect for free range.I have kept them and they are stress free just vaccinate them against Newcastle and fowl pox and you are good to go.

5.) Turkeys
Hardy when grown, but young poults need care and warmth.Their poults are hatched partially blind hence the low survival rate of the young ones.

6.) Pigeons
Hardly get sick, live anywhere, and feed themselves. They practice monogamy unlike other birds😂

7.)Quails
Small but strong. Just keep them clean and well-ventilated.Some Kenyans would punch me in the throat if I mentioned these birds near them. They know what happened many years ago 😂

8.) Improved kienyeji (Kuroiler, Sasso, Kenbro, Rainbow roosters) Strong but need more feed than pure local breeds. You see the reason why I told you that improved kienyeji is just a fancy name? There's nothing kienyeji about them. They are just hybrid chicken.

9.) Exotic layers/Commercial hybrid layers (Isa Brown, Hyline Brown, Lohmann Brown)
Great layers but very sensitive to stress and weather.Greatest care is needed to raise them. They are however egg laying machines.

10.) Broilers (Cobb 500,Hubbard broilers,Ross 308)
Grow fast, yes, but need perfect care — heat, feed, hygiene, everything must be right.Prone to heart attack if it grows extremely fast.Their meat producing ability beats both the kienyeji chicken and improved kienyeji.

If you want birds that survive tough conditions
go for guinea fowl, ducks, geese, local kienyeji, quails and pigeons.
If you want high egg or meat production go for layers, broilers, improved kienyeji chicken and turkeys, but manage them like babies.

How would you rank them in order of hardiness?

Are you in the diaspora and thinking of starting a small poultry project for your family back home?
Maybe you’re a young person who just finished school and is looking for something to do?
Or a stay-at-home mum or dad who wants a project to keep you busy?
Perhaps you work in town and want to set up something for your parents in the rural area?
Or maybe you’re employed and just want a reliable side hustle?

If that sounds like you, then poultry farming might just be your next big move

You can start with Kuroiler or Rainbow Rooster chickens and sell them for meat after only 3 months of rearing.
Don’t worry if you’re new even starting with 50 chicks is enough to learn and grow from there.

I’ll personally walk with you through the journey from chick to market and guide you on proper poultry management.

Rainbow roosters and Kuroiler F1 chicks are top quality and trusted by many farmers:
✅ Fast growing
✅ Early maturing
✅ Great weight gain
✅ Good feed conversion
✅ Fully traceable

Chicks are available every Tuesday and Friday, and each goes for KSh 110.
We can deliver to you wherever you are in Kenya.

If interested, just call or WhatsApp me on 0729568151 and book your chicks early.

Let’s grow together — one bird at a time 🐣💪

Kenyan farmers targeting the December broiler meat market have 10 weeks at their disposal starting today if they want to harvest two batches of broiler birds by 25th December.
Those into slow growing broilers also known as improved kienyeji(kuroiler, sasso, kenbro, rainbow roosters) have 12 weeks at their disposal for just a single batch(by end of December this year). The best time to start was early last month but there is still time.
Don't say I didn't tell you.

For some of us who’ve been in poultry practice for some years, it’s common to get a call from farmers who either want to dispose off their pullets because they can’t manage feeding them until 4-5 months when they start laying or want to shift from broilers to layers and vice versa and use the same structures. You’ll need to have some knowledge of broiler and layer farming operations.
I’ll attempt to highlight some of the significant comparisons with huge economic impact.

Comparison between managing 5000 layers and 5000 broiler deep litter farms: differences that have economic impact

1. Layers occupy double the space occupied by broilers. Meaning you’ll have two houses, each carrying 2500 for layers OR one house with double the space.

2. You keep layers on the farm up to about 4½ to 5 months to start egg production. This means you need sufficient running capital otherwise you’ll get stuck along the way and dispose the pullets. For broilers, you harvest after 35 days.

3. If you were to be harvesting 5000 broilers once a week, which what those in broiler business do, you’ll need at least 6 houses of 5000 capacity, maintaining a resting period of 5-7 days for each house after removing the birds, equipment, litter, cleaning and disinfection. This has a huge economic impact both on the market and running costs.

4. The feeding program for layers is different from that of broilers. The broiler diet being geared toward fast growth. Some curious farmers have attempted feeding their layers broiler feeds and have had a sad story to tell. In some practices, layers chicks are fed broiler starter if they’re under weight and once they attain the required weight they’re returned to chick mash diet. This works but need experience.

5. Broilers are fed pre-starter crumbs, starter pellets and finisher pellets. This reduces feed waste and increases feed utilization thus fast growth and uniform weight. Broilers fed three phase diets are harvested within 35 days at a live weight of 2.2 to 2.3kg.
Layers are fed on mash diets because of their slow growth and management of metabolic conditions that would result from forced accelerated growth.

6. Litter management in broiler operations is key. To avoid ammonia burns, wet litter must be avoided. Turning of litter is a daily activity and ensuring there is no drinker leakage. Any water spillage on the litter will lead to litter caking and hence ammonia build buildup. Ventilation and stocking density must be managed to avoid ammonia buildup.

7. House design, east-west orientation is important as it allows fresh air in the house. Storied buildings are not the best for broilers. Houses build between other structures are obstructed from fresh air access. Broiler with burns (hock, breast) are unisuitable for the market and are a welfare concern.
In layers, litter challenge is uncommon. Layers bath in and scratch the litter turning it by themselves. Rarely is litter changed in layer operations.

These are just a few differences that I picked.

Checking on bird welfare

26/09/2025

In your entire life you’ve never reared even one chicken, now you think that just because you have some money, you are ready to invest in the poultry business. You think that after reading from Mr. Google, reading exaggerated farming blogs or watching uncle Youtube that you are now set for large-scale poultry farming? The character development that will hit you is still doing press ups.

My friend, sacrifice some time and learn from an expert or a consultant. It costs you nothing to ask to visit or volunteer at someone else's poultry farm. Learn about the different breeds of chicken and which to rear and for what purpose, learn about chicken feed types, learn about poultry management, learn about challenges involved in poultry farming, learn about the market demand and supply, learn about your nearby competitors, learn about how to mix your own feeds.Last but not least learn about record keeping and biosecurity measures.

You think someone else will run your chicken business as you relax in the office in a swinging chair or as you sip Fanta orange or beer at home?At least first understand the workings of the business so that you know the right questions to ask as you manage it remotely.

There is no way your farm employee will ever understand your business better than you. When your employee realizes that they understand the workings of the business better than you, then why would they continue working for you? Or why wouldn’t they cheat on you?

If you can’t become an apprentice in another person’s business, then atleast start small. You who has never reared one chicken, what makes you start off with 3000 chicken without employing an expert at the farm? Be patient and start with 50,100,200 or 500 and gradually increase the number after learning about the dynamics of the business.Don’t burn your cash.In business what we have is time, persistence and perseverance. Be patient enough to learn. Go slow but sure. Make your mistakes and learn from them.
