Cité par Strabon et Pline l’Ancien, Marsyas est l’antique nom de la vallée de la Bekaa, située en contrefort du Mont-Liban. Elle tire son nom du célèbre satyre phrygien, symbole de la liberté de l’homme face aux caprices divins, qui défia Apollon dans une joute musicale et par son audace se vit écorché vif. La Vallée de Marsyas, ou Plaine de Noé telle que la prénommaient les anciens arabes en réfé

rence au lieu de sépulture supposé du prophète biblique, est également le site de l’ancienne Baalbeck-Heliopolis, la cité du soleil ou se déroulaient des cultes venant d’Orient et d’Occident.

Cited by Strabo and Pliny the Elder, Marsyas is the ancient name of the Bekaa valley situated between Mount Lebanon and the Anti-Lebanon. It draws its name from the famous Phrygian Satyr who symbolized the freedom of man in the face of the Gods, and once defied Apollo in a musical contest to find himself flayed to death. The Marsyas Valley, also known to the ancient Arabs as Noah’s Valley in reference to the alleged burial site of the biblical prophet, is primarily known for the sacred temples of Baalbek/Heliopolis, the city of the sun in which eastern and western worshipping cults took place.
