Bellini died young at the age of 33 leaving behind 10 operas.
One of the masters of the bel canto tradition, along with Rossini and Donizetti, Bellini’s style differed by avoiding exhilarating brilliance, favoring instead long lyrical melodies and emotional truths.
His masterpiece is Norma, set in ancient Gaul under Roman occupation. The plot centers on the Druid high priestess (Norma) who is torn between her duties to her people, her love for the Roman general Pollione (who is the father of her two children), her jealousy of the young priestess Adalgisa, whose Pollione is in love with, and her children.
Norma is portrayed in this recording by the great Australian soprano Joan Sutherland.
Sutherland possesses a large, generous voice with a flawless technique capable of negotiating Bellini’s long smooth melodies with ease and opulent beauty.
The rest of the cast are equally impressive.

I chose Domaine Wardy’s lightly oaked Chardonnay to accompany my listening experience, it has beautiful elegance to match Bellini’s elegant melodic writing.

Our first tasting of the year at the summer venue was supposed to be a “tasting ta7t etTooteh” but the mid-day sun did not approve, so we had to move to our regular shaded location for a full white wine tasting for our friends
