After a Heavy Flood: What You Should Do to Clean
1. Ensure Safety First
Before entering the house:
• Turn off electricity at the main breaker if water is near outlets or appliances.
• Wear protective gear: boots, gloves, mask, long sleeves.
• Check for structural damage (cracks, sagging ceilings). If unsure, get a professional.
• Watch out for snakes, rodents, insects that might have entered.
2. Document Everything
Before cleaning:
• Take photos and videos of all damaged areas and belongings.
• Keep a list of items destroyed helpful for insurance claims.
3. Remove Water & Mud
• Use buckets, pumps, or wet/dry vacuums to remove standing water.
• Shovel out thick mud before it dries.
• Rinse the area with clean water to remove dirt.
4. Get Things Dry Quickly
Flood moisture causes mold in 24–48 hours.
• Open all windows and doors.
• Use fans, dehumidifiers, heaters if available.
• Remove all wet carpets, furniture, mattresses, and place outside to dry.
5. Throw Away Unsafe Items
Discard anything that cannot be properly cleaned:
• Food, even canned if the seal is damaged.
• Medicine, cosmetics.
• Insulation, drywall, cardboard, particle board.
• Cloth items that stayed wet and smell musty.
6. Clean & Disinfect Thoroughly
After everything is dry:
Hard Surfaces
• Scrub with soap and clean water.
• Then disinfect with 1 cup of bleach in 4 litres of water.
• Never mix bleach with ammonia or cleaners.
Floors and Walls
• Remove drywall up to 30–60 cm above flood line.
• Remove baseboards to let walls dry.
• Mop and disinfect floors.
Furniture and Appliances
• Clean with soap and water.
• If appliances were underwater, have them checked by a technician.
7. Prevent Mold Growth
• Clean visible mold with bleach solution.
• Keep fans running until everything is fully dry.
• Use dehumidifiers for several days.
8. Check Utilities
Have professionals inspect:
• Electrical systems
• Plumbing
• Gas lines
• Heating systems
Do not try to turn appliances back on until the inspection is done.
9. Wash Clothing & Bedding Properly
• Wash in hot water, preferably twice.
• Use bleach if fabric allows.
10. Dispose of Waste Properly
• Separate hazardous waste (paint, chemicals, batteries).
• Bag and tie all flood-damaged items.
11. Take Care of Yourself
• Flood cleanup is physically and emotionally draining.
• Take breaks, stay hydrated, and ask for help if needed.
