A small gesture… but a meaningful one

These little homes, quietly tucked into our walls and beams, are invitations.
for birds to rest, to nest, to belong.

This land isn’t ours alone. It’s shared with wings, roots, and everything in between.
And when we make space for them, the land comes alive in ways we could never create on our own.

Because true sustainability isn’t just about growing food, it’s about making room for life.

As our paddy fields near harvest, we welcome the Sinhala & Tamil New Year. A time that has always been tied to the rhythms of agriculture.

Milk rice, prepared for this season, is more than just food. It’s a symbol of gratitude, prosperity, and the bond between people and the land.

Sitting here, overlooking the fields, it’s easy to see how deeply our traditions are rooted in farming, the cycles of planting, waiting, and harvesting.

This season tested us. Heavy rains and floods destroyed much of our seed paddy in the early stages. It was disheartening… but it also pushed us to adapt.

We saved what little Suwandel seed we could and transplanted 21-day-old seedlings in small bunches at 10-inch spacing. Then we introduced Azolla into the field.

Azolla works quietly but powerfully:

Fixes nitrogen naturally
Suppresses weeds
Buffers moisture
Adds organic matter

And the excess? We harvest it and feed it to our ducks and cows, turning one system’s surplus into another’s nourishment.

What began as a setback became a lesson in resilience. And now, our paddy stands almost ready for harvest.

Nature challenges. We observe. We adapt.

These gentle souls are an important part of life at Paddy Peaks.

Rescued, protected, and cared for.

They play a role in healing the land. They help keep weeds under control, turn grass into rich organic fertilizer, and quietly support our regenerative farming system. Beyond all that, their calm presence reminds us why we choose to farm with compassion and patience.

This land thrives because of relationships like these.
