Midigama Fruit Farm was established in 1996 under visionary leadership of Michael de Vass Gunawardena who was recognized as an Ecological farming pioneer in small island, Sri Lanka. Since beginning, Agroecology concept was implemented by utilizing traditional three canopy multi cropping system (Kandyan garden concept) of growing tropical fruits under the primary social crop coconut in a traditiona

l village in Midigama. The diversified plant systems with in compacted physical space entails richness of biodiversity, enhance water-soil health & fertility, conserve and protect soil, ecological pest control, and finally leading to sustainable ecological agriculture. In addition, the village based eco-farming of Midigama Fruit Farm recognized as a sustainable model of agri-business in the region. Midigama fruit farm helps to conserve environment, improve regional economies, upgrade livelihoods of villages, develop supply chain linkages with small holdings enterprises, contribute socio-economic growth, offer solution to regional food security, assist to eliminate malnutrition, empower women employments through resurgence of the eco system. In summary, Midigama Fruit Fram is a village-based fruit farming system under coconut with effective utilization of land as a model for Village development by preserving environment, balancing ecosystem, benefiting the local community, promoting fruit farming, and finally proofing as a viable and economical tested agro-ecological business model. The Midigama Fruit Farm prevailingly stands as a “Village-based tested market model” and looking forward to replicate same model and receive recognition as a futuristic business model in agri-business of the region.

3. Heen Naran🍊🍋
Heen Naran is a small traditional citrus fruit native to Sri Lanka, closely related to mandarin and tangerine varieties. Scientifically known as Citrus crenatifolia (sometimes grouped under Citrus reticulata), this unique fruit is loved for its refreshing aroma, tangy taste, and natural medicinal value.
The plant produces small, round green fruits that gradually turn yellow or orange when fully ripe. The peel is thin and fragrant, while the juicy flesh has a pleasant sweet–sour flavor. Heen Naran trees grow well in tropical climates and are commonly found in home gardens and village farms across Sri Lanka.

In this session, we will explore the importance of fresh farm produce, its nutritional benefits, and how locally grown vegetables and fruits contribute to a healthy lifestyle and sustainable farming.

Session 2
Passiflora edulis, commonly known as passion fruit, is a tropical climbing vine native to southern Brazil, Paraguay, and northern Argentina. 🌿
The fruit is round to oval in shape and can be yellow or dark purple when fully ripe. Inside, it has a juicy pulp filled with many edible seeds.
Passion fruit is rich in: • Vitamin C – helps improve immunity and keep the body healthy
• Fiber – supports good digestion
• Antioxidants – help protect the body and skin
• Vitamin A – good for eyes and healthy skin
• Natural calming properties – passion fruit leaves are traditionally used in herbal teas to help relaxation and better sleep.🤗

Solanum torvum, commonly known as turkey berry or “Thiththabatu” in Sri Lanka, is a bushy, upright, and spiny perennial plant valued for both its nutritional and culinary benefits. Rich in essential vitamins and minerals while being low in calories, Thiththabatu is a healthy addition to a balanced diet. In Sri Lankan cuisine, it is traditionally prepared as a flavorful curry or mixed with coconut to make a delicious mallum🤗🙏
