The coastal town of Ambalangoda in the Southern Province is the historic hub for traditional mask carving and dance drama.

Wood Type: Carved mainly from light, balsa-like Kaduru wood (Nux vomica), which grows near paddy fields and is smoke-dried for a week before carving.

According to the Lakpura Educational Guide, Wes Muhunu fall into three primary categories

Raksha (Demon) Masks: Large, colorful, and fierce faces featuring bulging eyes and cobras, used in festivals and processions to ward off evil spirits and the evil eye. Common variations include Naga Raksha (cobra) and Gini Raksha (fire).

Kolam Masks: Used in comedic, satirical folk theater and storytelling dances that portray royal, colonial, or everyday village characters.

Sanni (Devil Dance) Masks: Traditionally worn by exorcists (eduras) in healing ceremonies to cure specific physical or mental illnesses believed to be caused by demons.

Many people hang smaller versions of these masks in homes or offices as cultural art pieces or protective talismans.

Ceylon Tea making process step by step

To make a classic cup of hot black tea, boil fresh water, pour it over a tea bag or loose leaves, steep for 3 to 5 minutes, and remove the leaves before adding milk or sugar.

Step 1: Boil the Water

Fill your kettle with fresh, cold water.

Heat the water until it reaches a rolling boil (100°C for black tea).

Step 2: Add the Tea

Place one tea bag or one teaspoon of loose-leaf tea into your mug or teapot.

If using loose leaves, use a strainer or a mesh infuser to keep the leaves contained.

Step 3: Steep the Tea

Pour the hot, boiling water directly over the tea.

Cover your cup or pot with a small lid or plate to trap the heat.

Let it steep for 3 to 5 minutes so the flavor comes out. Do not steep too long, or the tea will taste bitter.

Step 4: Remove and Add Extras

Take out the tea bag or strain out the loose leaves.

Add a splash of milk and sugar or honey to your taste, then stir well.

SRI LANKA: THE ISLAND OF GEMSTONES

For centuries, Sri Lanka has been known around the world for its remarkable variety and quality of gemstones.

According to the National Gem and Jewellery Authority (NGJA), Sri Lanka has around 75 varieties of gemstones that have been mined or found on the island.

The country’s gemstone deposits occur mainly in alluvial gravels found in valley bottoms, where streams carry gem minerals released from weathered rocks on hillsides and hilltops.

Sri Lanka’s geological history also contributes to its gemstone wealth. Nearly 90% of the island is covered by Precambrian crystalline rocks, with gemstones also associated with certain rocks and pegmatites.

Among the major gemstone species found in Sri Lanka are:

 Corundum
 Beryl
 Chrysoberyl
 Zircon
 Spinel
 Quartz
 Garnet
 Topaz
 Tourmaline
 Feldspar

The island was historically known as “Rathna-dweepa” — the Island of Gemstones, a name found in historical chronicles.

From ancient times to today, Sri Lanka’s gemstones have remained an important part of the island’s natural and cultural heritage.
