On February 5, 2026, a high-level working meeting on rural drinking water safety and post-cyclone water quality risks was convened by the Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply of Sri Lanka. The meeting was chaired by Hon. Dr. Susil Ranasinghe, Minister of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, with Eng. L. Kumudu Lal Bogahawatta, Secretary to the Ministry, in attendance. Senior officials from the Department of National Community Water Supply (DNCWS), the National Water Supply and Drainage Board (NWSDB), and experts from the University of Peradeniya and Chinese Academy of Sciences participated alongside the delegation from the China–Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Centre for Water Technology (JRDC).
In the context of recent flooding, Hon. Minister Ranasinghe emphasized that rural drinking water safety is a matter of public security requiring systematic and coordinated interventions, including the formulation of a Master Plan for rural drinking water safety. Prof. Yuansong Wei presented China’s experience in rural drinking water governance, highlighting source protection strategies, R&D for technology integration and innovation, and institutional frameworks combining master planning, regulation, financing, and supervision. JRDC briefly introduced its analytical capacity and ISO accreditation progress, positioning itself as a key technical support platform for rapid post-flood well assessment.
Participants agreed to advance a structured risk assessment approach, develop a Master Plan for rural drinking water safety and strengthen long-term China–Sri Lanka cooperation in rural drinking water management.

On February 3, 2026, a delegation from the Ministry of Commerce of China visited the China–Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Centre for Water Technology (JRDC) to conduct an on-site evaluation and hold a meeting on post-cyclone disaster recovery for the JRDC.
The delegation included Mr. Xing XIA, Deputy Director of the South Asia Division, Agency for International Economic Co-operation (AIECO), the Ministry of Commerce of China, representatives from the Chinese Embassy in Sri Lanka, and technical experts. They were warmly received by Eng. L. Kumudu Lal Bogahawatta, Secretary to the Sri Lankan Ministry of Housing, Construction and Water Supply, together with senior officials and professors from the JRDC, NWSDB, University of Peradeniya, and the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
The Chinese delegation expressed concern regarding the flooding-related damages and confirmed that evaluation findings would be reported to relevant authorities in China to support decision-making on potential assistance. Both sides agreed to accelerate the preparation of a formal recovery proposal through government channels and to prioritize safety restoration, repair of core laboratory instruments, and improvements in flood resilience measures.

The International Water Conference on Climate Change and Environmental Pollution: Challenges and Solutions for Food Security and Public Health (Young Researchers’ Conference) was held on 16th December 2025 at the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya. The event was jointly organized by the University of Peradeniya, the Research Centre for Eco-Environmental Sciences, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the China-Sri Lanka Joint Research and Demonstration Centre (JRDC).

The conference opened with a formal inauguration and a keynote address by Prof. Wei Yuansong, setting the stage for insightful discussions. Invited speakers and young researchers presented their work across key themes including water and wastewater management, air pollution and public health, and soil health, climate change, and food security. The event highlighted the importance of collaboration, innovation, and emerging technologies in addressing environmental challenges and promoting sustainable solutions for a healthier future.
