Terroir 2026

Terroir 2026
My grandfather once planted these vines. Every year, around his birthday on 6 September, the grapes would be ripe. And this year, the vines are heavy with them.
In anthropology, continuity between generations is also about the transmission of knowledge, habits, places, and ways of caring. One generation begins something; the next does not necessarily need to create anew. Sometimes its most important task is to recognise the value of what has already been started — and choose to continue it.
Perhaps that is why this year’s harvest feels so special to me.
It is a very quiet form of inheritance. Roots that remain in the ground, and grapes that, after all these years, continue to ripen.
A living family archive.
Knowledge of the soil, the seasons, the harvest, and the work it requires is not passed down through words alone. It is inherited through practice — repeating gestures, tending the same plants, waiting for the next harvest.
Anthropology might call this embodied knowledge: we know because we continue doing what those before us once did.
