A Historic Milestone: Jablan Winery Earns Montenegro’s First Demeter Certification 🌿🍷

Jablan Winery has officially become the first winery in Montenegro to achieve Demeter International certification. Nestled within the sun-drenched karst terrain of Rvaši and the protected ecosystem of Lake Skadar, this family-run estate has long prioritized proper environmental stewardship.

Today, this official biodynamic certification validates their core philosophy: creating world-class, low-intervention wines while nurturing a living, self-sustaining ecosystem.

Rooted in Heritage: The Journey of Borislav & Angelika Jablan

Their story is deeply tied to the land. Building upon a generational heritage that includes vines planted 70 years ago near Lake Skadar, founders Borislav and Angelika Jablan set out to establish a winery dedicated to authenticity, patience, and ecological harmony.

Transitioning to certified biodynamic viticulture requires complete dedication:

- Beyond Organic: Demeter standards treat the vineyard as a holistically balanced, living organism.
- Harmonious Protection: Guided by natural rhythms, we rely on herbal teas (like Equisetum arvensis), algae extracts, and minimal Demeter-approved preparations to boost the vine’s natural immune system instead of using harsh synthetic chemicals.
- Living Soil: We keep our vineyards wild and lush, prioritizing soil regeneration, native biodiversity, and pristine water sources.

This Biodynamic Federation Demeter International seal recognizes years of dedicated, courageous work in our vineyards and cellar.

Award-Winning Terroir: International Acclaim at BIWC 2026

They believe that true low-intervention farming directly elevates what ends up in the glass. By trusting nature and employing spontaneous fermentation with wild, native yeasts, aging in everything from amphorae to qvevris without aggressive filtration, their wines offer a true reflection of the unique terroir.

This philosophy was recently validated on the international stage at The Balkans International Wine Competition and Festival (BIWC 2026):

🥇 Kotso 2024 (Gold Medal): A bold red blend of Kratošija and Vranac, capturing the raw energy, mineral depth, and intensity of the karst landscape.

🥈 Dodir 2025 (Silver Medal): An aromatic, expressive skin-contact orange wine (Rkatsiteli & Tamjanika), celebrated by international Master of Wine judges for its complex structure and thoughtful innovation.

Pioneering Sustainability in a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Rvaši sits at the gateway to Lake Skadar, one of Europe’s most vital bird reserves and a freshly designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Farming responsibly alongside this protected sanctuary is more than a technique; it is our duty!

"We don’t just grow wine; we cultivate life. Pure. Wild. Unapologetically Montenegrin."

As Montenegro’s pioneer in Demeter-certified biodynamics, Jablan Winery is proud to set a new benchmark for sustainable viticulture across the Balkans, protecting their region’s delicate flora, fauna, and water tables for generations to come.

They invite wine lovers, conscious travelers, and adventurers to experience their estate firsthand. They offer intimate, small-scale visitor experiences that connect you directly to the land:

Hands, Clay, and Nature: Pinot Gris & Muscat Blanc enter the Qvevris 🏺

Harvest brought something truly special to our cellar. We gathered our Pinot Gris and Muscat Blanc, fruits of a season nurtured in harmony with Rvaši’s living landscape.

True to our low-intervention, artisan philosophy, we did things the old-school, intentional way: hand-picked and meticulously hand-destemmed grape by grape. No shortcuts, no heavy machinery; just hands, focus, and a deep respect for the fruit.

Now, both varieties rest together inside our earthenware qvevris to begin their spontaneous fermentation with wild, native yeasts.

We believe that great winemaking isn’t about control or spectacle; it’s about authentic, hands-on craft, small-scale intention, and trust in nature. By letting the clay breathe and the native yeasts do their work, we allow the raw energy, terroir, and delicate aromatics of these varieties to express themselves untamed.

From human hands to clay, this is low-intervention winemaking in its purest form. A living process, crafted from the ground up. 🍇

Have you ever tasted an orange wine aged in qvevri? Stay tuned as this story unfolds in the cellar! 🥂

The Pulse of the Land: Jablan Wins Gold at The Balkans International Wine Competition and Festival (BIWC 2026)

Why we’re all about it.

From Montenegro to the World: Rvaši has officially arrived. And honestly? It’s the moment we needed.

Our Jablan Kotso 2024 just won a Gold Medal at the Balkans International Wine Competition (BIWC 2026) on the sun-soaked island of Hvar, Croatia. This isn’t just a trophy on a shelf. It’s proof that you can do things differently—radically differently—and still win.

That low-intervention, biodynamic, terroir-driven wines from a small corner of Montenegro can stand shoulder to shoulder with the global elite. Lake Skadar: UNESCO Biosphere recognition

Big news for our region! 🌿🍷

We are incredibly proud to share that our breathtaking neighbor, Lake Skadar, has just officially received UNESCO Biosphere Reserve recognition! This prestigious milestone honors the harmonious bond between local communities, sustainable heritage, and the unmatched biodiversity of our home.

UNESCO officially designated the Skadar Lake Watershed as a Biosphere Reserve on World Environment Day (June 5, 2026). It is a historic milestone: our first new biosphere reserve in 50 years, building on the legacy of the Tara River Basin’s 1976 inscription (under Yugoslavia).

At Jablan Winery, this deep connection to nature is exactly what drives us. Nestled in the rugged karst terrain right alongside this ecosystem, our low-intervention, biodynamic wines are a living reflection of this protected, sun-drenched landscape. When you taste our amphora-aged Vranac and Kratošija, you are tasting the raw energy of a world-class terroir.

As the world wakes up to the wild spirit of Montenegro’s natural wonders, we invite you to experience it firsthand.

Come for the wine... stay for the region! 🍇 🥂🍷

A lovely video by Elena Chugreeva ():

'While traveling through Montenegro, we discovered a beautiful organic, family-run winery . The owners are incredibly kind people who inherited the estate and have been passionately growing their family business since 2020.

Their dedication to traditional winemaking is truly inspiring:

* 🌸 Rosé: Crafted from the local Kratosija grape using direct pressing (no maceration) for a fresh, crisp taste.
* 🥂 White Wine: A unique blend featuring Rkatsiteli grapes.
* 🍷 Red Wine: A rich combination of indigenous Vranac and Kratosija grapes.

Both the white and red wines undergo skin maceration and are aged in traditional clay amphorae (qvevri), followed by aging in oak barrels.

We were absolutely thrilled to walk through the vineyards, see the ancient amphorae with our own eyes, and visit their incredible 300-year-old house. 🌿

If you ever find yourself in Montenegro, you must visit this wonderful family!

📌 Tip for your visit: Be sure to call or message them in advance to book your stay. The hosts speak both English and Montenegrin.

Vineyard protection based on love, dedication, courage, dignity, truth and joy

Today, we want to open our gates and share a behind-the-scenes look at how we care for our vines, which are exposed to fungal diseases especially in downy, warm spring climate.

For us in the world of responsible viticulture, transparency is a key approach. At tastings we are asked how we manage the health of our grapes without resorting to harsh synthetic chemicals. We preventively defend our vines and in the end our harvest against fungal diseases with low key interventions.

A Natural Defense System

Instead of heavy industrial fungicides, we utilize a thoughtful, Demeter-approved approach. In this video, you are seeing us apply a preventive treatment based on a low-dose copper based agent to hold Downy mildew away. The maximum of total copper applied to 1ha (10.000m2) of vineyard per year must not exceed 3kg to meet Demeter standards. This limit translates compared to conventional fungal protection to courage.

But we don’t stop there. To minimize the amount of copper used and to boost the vine’s own immune system, we add a potent, natural ‘cocktail’:

• Equisetum arvensis (Field Horsetail) 🌿: We brew a tea from this ancient plant. It is rich in silica, which helps strengthen the outer ‘skin’ of the vine leaves, making it harder for fungi to take hold.

• Algae Extract: 🌊 Think of this as a multivitamin for the vineyard. These extracts provide essential trace elements and amino acids that reduce plant stress and improve resilience.

Why This Matters

By choosing a preventive rather than curative method, we work in harmony with the ecosystem. We aren’t just fighting fungi; we are nurturing a living environment. This dedication to biodynamic principles ensures that when you open a bottle of Jablan, you are tasting love, dedication, courage, dignity, truth and joy.

Did you know that teas could be used to protect a vineyard? Let us know in the comments!

Cheers to wine with a conscience!

Golden light over the karst. ☀️🌿

There is a quiet rhythm in our Rvaši estate as the sun dips below the hills. We keep our vineyard wild and lush, letting the grass grow tall between the vines to maintain a living, breathing ecosystem. This isn’t just farming; it’s a partnership with the Montenegrin landscape.

By practicing low-intervention farming, we ensure that the raw limestone mineralogy of this land is felt in every pour of our rosé and amphora wines.

From these sun-drenched rows to your glass, the transition is seamless.

At Jablan Winery, we don’t just grow wine; we cultivate life. Pure. Wild. Unapologetically Montenegrin. 🍷

Which of our wines would you pair with this sunset?
