The Broad Bean, the Turnip & the Scallop
There was a time when people gathered around work.
Making pasta.
Mending baskets.
Carding wool.
Shelling beans.
The hands were busy, but the real work happened elsewhere…as repetitive movements occupied the body, ❤️ softened, 🧠 aligned, and wisdom moved freely through the circle.
Stories were shared.
Problems were solved.
Knowledge travelled from one generation to the next.
Small circles of people doing simple things together became the invisible infrastructure of community.
Today, while peeling broad beans with my dear friend , I found myself wondering:
Have all our efficiencies really improved our quality of life?
Because honestly, I would rather shell 30 kilos of beans with someone I love than have the job done instantly and miss everything that happens in between.
And while our hands worked, we talked about another story.
The story of the sea.
Of waters being emptied faster than they can regenerate.
Of biodiversity disappearing beneath the surface.
Of the impact hidden behind convenience.
But change doesn’t always start with grand gestures.
Sometimes it starts by knowing your fisherman.
Choosing local.
Asking questions.
Understanding where food comes from.
Supporting people who harvest with care rather than extract without limits.
As on land, so in the sea.
May respect return.
May attention return.
May our food once again connect us to the places, creatures and people that sustain us.
May your hands, as extensions of your heart, become the instruments through which belonging, beauty, and care return to the world.
And may our tables become circles again. 🌱🌊✨
