Research has identified the indigenous Maltese goat as a unique and genetically distinct population. The study, carried out by an academic from a German university, was presented during an event organised by the non-governmental organisation Breeds of Origin Conservancy. The research highlighted the importance of recognising the Maltese goat at a national level and of establishing conservation measures to protect its genetic value as well as the cultural and rural heritage associated with it.
