The introduction of effective, natural pest control agents is a cornerstone of modern integrated pest management, and few species exemplify this better than the eleven-spotted ladybird, Coccinella undecimpunctata.
This remarkable beetle is a highly efficient biological control agent, particularly valued in greenhouse environments where pest outbreaks can escalate rapidly under controlled conditions. Both the adults and larvae are voracious predators, feeding primarily on aphids, but also targeting other soft-bodied pests such as whiteflies and small larvae. A single individual can consume dozens of aphids per day, making populations of this species extremely effective at suppressing infestations before they reach damaging levels.
Unlike chemical pesticides, Coccinella undecimpunctata offers a sustainable and environmentally responsible solution. It leaves no toxic residues, poses no risk to crops or workers, and integrates seamlessly into ecological pest management strategies. Its use supports biodiversity within greenhouse systems while reducing dependency on synthetic interventions.
Another major advantage of this species is its adaptability. It performs exceptionally well under Mediterranean conditions and can thrive within greenhouse climates, actively seeking out pest hotspots and establishing localized control. This makes it particularly suitable for growers aiming to maintain consistent crop health while adhering to increasingly strict environmental and food safety standards.
At Insectopia, we have been working extensively on the rearing and application of beneficial insects, and we are excited to announce that Coccinella undecimpunctata will soon be available for supply. Our goal is to provide growers with robust, high-quality biological control agents that are ready to perform from the moment they are introduced.
Stay tuned for more updates as we prepare to launch this valuable ally in sustainable agriculture, helping you protect your crops the natural way. Any one interested send pm for further information.

Cockroaches might be among the world’s most disliked creatures, but Maltese naturalist and pest management consultant Arnold Sciberras is working to change that perception.

Every year on 14th March, scientists and enthusiasts mark World Cockroach Day, an initiative aimed at promoting knowledge about cockroaches and highlighting their ecological importance.

Sciberras has also expanded the idea with World American Cockroach Day on 25th May and support for World Pest Day on 6th June, linking public awareness with responsible, science based pest management.

“These days aren’t about glorifying pests,” Sciberras said. “They’re about understanding their biology and their role in nature.”

Cockroaches have survived for more than 300 million years and play an important role in ecosystems by recycling nutrients and supporting food chains. Scientists have also used species like the American cockroach as model organisms in research into movement, resilience and robotics.

The date of 14th March honours pioneering cockroach researcher Lewis T Roth, whose work helped shift scientific understanding of the insect group.

Sciberras says the message goes beyond cockroaches and applies to insects in general. He points out that only a small number of the more than 5,000 cockroach species are considered pests, while the vast majority play beneficial roles in ecosystems.

Through awareness days and initiatives like Be Nice To Bugs Day, he hopes more people will replace fear with curiosity and better understand the role insects play in keeping the planet functioning.

Do cockroaches deserve a reputation rethink?

Morio beetle farming is a lot of work but it is incredibly rewarding.
From separating larvae by size, to managing humidity, substrate quality, feeding schedules, and preventing cannibalism during the pupal stage, copulation… every step requires attention and patience. There are no shortcuts if you want a healthy, productive colony
The transformation itself is always fascinating. Watching a superworm isolate, pupate, and emerge as a powerful darkling beetle never gets old. It’s a reminder that even in controlled farming systems, nature still holds its quiet magic.
Beyond the science, the reward comes in sustainability. Morio beetles provide a high-protein, efficient feed source for reptiles, birds, and other insectivorous animals. For those of us working in entomology and insect production, it’s also about improving breeding lines, optimizing yields, and refining best practices year after year.
Yes, it’s labor-intensive. Yes, it requires discipline.
But building a stable, thriving colony from the ground up? That’s deeply satisfying.
Patience. Observation. Precision.
That’s morio farming.
