Water metrics in Mauritian hospitality: Data from the Sustainable Tourism workshop. 🇲🇺💧

At a recent workshop on Sustainable Tourism, the Ministry of Tourism and the Central Water Authority highlighted the water footprint of the hospitality sector.

With tourism driving 25 percent of GDP, industry stability is essential. When utilities account for up to 55 percent of property operating expenses, resource efficiency becomes critical to long term viability.

Key figures shared during the session include:
🔹 Infrastructure: An estimated 60 percent of water is lost in the public distribution network before delivery.
🔹 Consumption: Average daily usage ranges from 150 to 300 litres per tourist, with 35 percent of indoor usage flushed away.
🔹 Wastage: A single defective toilet flush can lose up to 200,000 litres annually.

The solutions are straightforward. Installing low flow fixtures can reduce consumption by 40 percent, while recycling greywater can cover 50 to 80 percent of non potable water needs for irrigation and facilities.

As the industry works toward greater sustainability, tracking these metrics is a vital step in protecting natural resources.

At AquaScience, our greatest asset is our people. With the alarming spread of synthetic drugs across Mauritius, protecting our work family is more critical than ever. Recent national data shows that our island is facing a severe public health crisis, with highly addictive synthetic substances becoming increasingly accessible and devastating local communities. This is a reality we simply cannot ignore.

We are proud to launch an 18 months+ awareness and support campaign for our employees under the theme: Choisir la Vie, Dir Non à la Drogue.

This initiative is brought to life through a powerful collaboration with the Rotary Club of Phoenix and the Rotary Club of Gros Cailloux, who share our commitment to a safer society.

To launch our first session, we welcomed Dr Nitish Sunt. Drawing from his frontline experience as the former coordinator for treatment and rehabilitation at the NADC and his current insights as a Medical Science lecturer at UOM, he broke down the harsh realities of the local synthetic drug epidemic and the profound resilience of the human spirit.

He reminded our team that refusing drugs is an active, daily choice to say yes to life, to family and to realising our full potential. This is just the beginning of our journey of learning and looking out for one another.
