How I Built FWPM Against All Odds!
Shrimp Farm Mauritius
From being told “ou pas pou capave faire sa ou”…
to building the pioneer of inland marine shrimp farming in Mauritius.
My name is Shaakir Dilmohamed, I am 30, and FWPM started from one big question:
How can an island import 70–75% of its food consumption?
I always dreamed of becoming an airline pilot, but I also always wanted to become an entrepreneur and build something of my own. At 18, I had booked my pilot training in South Africa, but due to financial constraints, I could not continue.
Life had another plan.
My father had started building a farmhouse in Rivière du Poste and had the idea of putting a small prawn farm near the parking area of what is now Restaurant Le Camaron. My wife kept pushing me to create something for myself.
That is when the vision started.
I chose aquaculture.
I chose to believe in an idea that many people said was impossible.
Banks, institutions, and many others said it was too risky, too far-fetched, and not profitable.
One officer even told me:
“Ou pas pou capave faire sa ou, ou pas pou gagne cass pou faire sa.”
I answered:
“ATAN OU POU TROUVER.”
I went to Malaysia to study, came back in 2018, and started the journey with many failures, research, trials, and sacrifices.
In February 2024, we received our official permit. In April 2024, we started our first official Litopenaeus vannamei farming operation.
Today, FWPM is the pioneer of inland marine shrimp farming in Mauritius, producing 25 tons of shrimp per year in 1,500 m³ including a water treatment centre.
Our second farm will take us to 60 tons per year. Our vision is a minimum of 500 tons per year by 2030.
Alhamdulillah for everything.
Thank you to my parents, my wife, our collaborators, shareholders, and every single person who believed in me and in FWPM.
A big shootout to my mentor
This is just the beginning.
Inshallah ☝️
