Everyone knows today its Thaipoosam Cavadee but did you that on this day Goddess Shakambhari an avatar of Devi Parvati appeared She is hailed as the Goddess of fruits and vegetation. Shakambhari is derived from the Sanskrit words Shak (meaning vegetation) and Bhari (meaning the bearer or holder).

Devotees of Goddess Shakambhari celebrate Shakambhari Purnima on the Purnima Tithi (Full Moon Day) in the Hindu month of Paush. This form of feminine power is believed to be an incarnation of Devi Parvati.

Today, on the day of Paush Purnima, devotees shall pay an ode to this avatar of the Mother Goddess.

She has four hands. In the upper left and right hands, she holds a bow and a lotus respectively. And in the lower right and left hands, she holds fruits and vegetables.

Here's how Goddess Shakambhari came into being

Once, there lived a demon named Durgamasur, who performed intense penance to please Lord Brahma. The demon wanted to obtain the four Vedas (the Rig Veda, the Yajur Veda, the Sama Veda and the Atharva Veda) from Brahma, the creator of the Universe and the author of the sacred scriptures. After years of penance, Durgamasur succeeded in pleasing Lord Brahma, who granted him the boon of obtaining the Vedas.

Gradually, the sages on the earth and the Devas in heaven lost all their powers in the absence of the Vedas. No Yagya or Havan was performed, and the Sages lost their knowledge. Soon the earth was hit by a famine owing to the dearth of water and rain. Therefore to save creation in the Universe, Devi Parvati appeared as Shakambari to eliminate Durgamasur and retrieve the Vedas from his clutches. Subsequently, she showered her blessings on the earth. Hence, Maa Shakambhari is worshipped as the Goddess of fruits and vegetation.

Shakambhari Purnima festival

The Shakambhari Navratri culminates on the Purnima Tithi of Paush Maas. This Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Shakambhari. It is distinct because unlike other Navratris that begin on the Pratipada Tithi (first day of the Lunar fortnight), Shakambhari Purnima commences on the Ashtami Tithi (eighth day) and ends on Purnima. Thus, devotees of the Mother Goddess pay ode to her by celebrating this festival.

Uttarayan, as Makara Sankranti is called in Gujarati, is a major festival in the state of Gujarat which lasts for two days

Gujaratis start their day by offering holy water and cow’s milk to the sun god in a copper utensil. Adding red colour flowers to the water is considered more auspicious. Adressing the sun in this manner takes away all tensions and open the doors of destiny.

It is a ritual to donate on this day. According to the scriptures the donations on this day are known to come back by a hundredfold. People usually donate blankets, warm clothing, butter, cereals - rice porridge etc.

Uttarayan, as Makara Sankranti is called in Gujarati, is a major festival in the state of Gujarat which lasts for two days.

14 January is Uttarayan and 15 January is Vasi-Uttarayan. Gujarati people keenly await this festival to fly kites, called 'patang'. Kites for Uttarayan are made of special light-weight paper and bamboo and are mostly rhombus shaped with central spine and a single bow.

The string often contains abrasives to cut down other people's kites.

In Gujarat, from December through to Makara Sankranti, people start enjoying Uttarayan. Undhiyu (spicy, baked mix of winter vegetables) and chikkis (made from til (sesame seeds), peanuts and jaggery) are the special festival recipes savoured on this day.

In the major cities of Ahmedabad, Surat, Vadodara, Rajkot, and Jamnagar the skies appear filled with thousands upon thousands of kites as people enjoy two full days of Uttarayan on their terraces. When people cut any kites they yell words like "kaypo chhe", "e lapet", "phirki vet phirki" and "lapet lapet" in Gujarati

The day after Diwali is when Gujarat celebrates its New Year, on Govardhan Puja. This day is known as Bestu Varas, Padva or Nutan Varsh and Varsha Pratipada. . This is celebrated on the first day of the new month of Kartik in the New Year, also known as Kartak Sud Ekam in Gujarat. The festive season is celebrated with rangolis, diyas and by worshipping Goddess Lakshmi.

The day begins with welcoming of the new years with the burst of firecrackers at 4 am in the morning. Hindus believe that a new day begins at 4 am or at dawn as opposed to the western belief that a day changes at 12 am midnight. There is custom observed by the young boys in the villages of Gujarat. They collect salt from the evaporated ponds and distribute it to people, calling it ‘sabras’ which means, everyone should taste, as it will bring luck in the New Year.

Vikram Era was started in 57 BC by Emperor Vikramaditya as a commemoration of his victory over the Shaks,at Ujjain, one among the four places of Kumbha Mela. This Hindu calendar is also known as Vikram Samvant and begins with the Month Kartik or Kartak In Gujarat.
This day marks the beginning of new financial year in Gujarat as well as in other states of North India.

According to the legends, Lord Krishna once performed Govardhan Pooja along with the people of Vraja for their protection from heavy rains. Since then, it became a tradition to worship Govardhan Parvat and celebrate this day as a New Year.

Bestu Varas is the time to forget all the misunderstandings, pains, hardships and ill-memories of past year. New Year in Gujarat is the time to enjoy and celebrate in a big way. Since these celebrations are coupled with the joy of Diwali, it is a gala time for the Gujaratis.
Almost all Gujarati houses are lit with modern electronic systems and decorated with colorful flowers. On this day, people by or stitch new dresses and visit temples with garlands and sweets. Some temples in Gujarat also conduct a grand Govardhan Pooja.

A lavish and tasty meal at the end of the celebration, is the major attraction and the temptation for all. Children and also the elders are seen eating heavy food on this day. Thus, New Year in Gujarat reflects the true spirit of Indian tradition and the essence of the Gujju culture. Love, affection, unity and togetherness is the main criteria of these celebrations.

People visit and wish each other “Nutunvarsh Abhinandan” meaning Happy New Year in Gujarati.
