When we first established our vegetable section, soil suitability and proximity to water source were our main considerations.
When it rained we discovered that this section gets flooded, so we did some swales upland and planted a few trees along.

The trees are doing a fantastic job of slowing rainwater currents and preventing soil erosion. Their leaves form a thick layer of humus when they fall on the ground, topping up our soil fertility. However, they've come along with shade, compromising suitability for most vegetable production. Limiting space availability.

For a while we abandoned this space. Ceasing production because most veggies weren't doing well under the shade.
Come July 2026 we decided to try Nkhwani under the shade. The outcome is promising as we've started plucking a few leaves for ndiwo already. Putting back to use this neglected section.

There are opportunities in every challenge, wisdom in dull moments, and prosperity in curiosity.
