The Laws of a Godly Marriage
Foundation Scripture: Genesis 2:18-25
"Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." — Genesis 2:24 (NKJV)
INTRODUCTION
Marriage is God's institution, not man's invention. Before there was government, business, or the Church, God established marriage. Every successful marriage operates according to divine principles. Just as natural laws govern the universe, there are spiritual laws that govern the health, stability, and longevity of a marriage.
Today, we will examine five fundamental laws of a Godly marriage.
1. THE LAW OF ACCEPTANCE
Key Scripture: Hebrews 13:4; Genesis 2:18
"Marriage is honourable among all..." — Hebrews 13:4
The first law is accepting God's idea of marriage. Many marriages struggle because people enter marriage with fear, wrong expectations, or worldly philosophies.
Marriage is:
God's design.
God's blessing.
God's covenant.
Acceptance means embracing marriage as God's gift and committing yourself fully to it.
Lesson: You cannot enjoy what you have not first accepted.

2. THE LAW OF RELATIONSHIP
Key Scriptures: Matthew 22:37-39; Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
Every successful marriage stands on two relationships.
A. RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD
A husband and wife must first love God before they can truly love one another.
A family that prays together develops spiritual strength.
Without God:
Love becomes conditional.
Forgiveness becomes difficult.
Unity becomes fragile.
B. RELATIONSHIP WITH EACH OTHER
Marriage is more than living in the same house.
A husband and wife should become:
Best friends
Prayer partners
Companions
Encouragers
They should:
Talk together.
Pray together.
Laugh together.
Dream together.
Build together.
Ecclesiastes 4:12 teaches that "a threefold cord is not quickly broken." When God is at the centre, the marriage becomes stronger.
3. THE LAW OF OBLIGATION
Key Scriptures: Ephesians 5:22-33; 1 Peter 3:7
Many marital conflicts arise because people demand their rights but neglect their responsibilities.
Marriage is sustained by fulfilled obligations.
The Husband's Responsibilities
A. LOVE YOUR WIFE
"Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church." — Ephesians 5:25
Christ loved sacrificially.
A husband's love should be:
Unconditional
Protective
Sacrificial
Patient
B. BE THE HEAD
"For the husband is head of the wife..." — Ephesians 5:23
Headship is not dictatorship.
Biblical leadership means:
Leading spiritually
Serving sacrificially
Protecting faithfully
Guiding wisely
C. HONOUR YOUR WIFE
"Giving honour unto the wife..." — 1 Peter 3:7
A husband should value, respect, appreciate, and protect his wife
THE WIFE'S RESPONSIBILITIES
A. BE A HELPER
"I will make him a helper comparable to him." — Genesis 2:18
The wife was created as a divine helper.
She strengthens, supports, encourages, and complements her husband.
B. BE A KEEPER OF THE HOME
Key Scripture: Titus 2:4-5
A godly wife builds an atmosphere of:
Peace
Order
Love
Wisdom
Hospitality
The home should become a place where God's presence dwells.
4. THE LAW OF PROVISION
Key Scripture: 1 Timothy 5:8
"If anyone does not provide for his own... he has denied the faith."
Provision primarily rests upon the husband.
Provision includes:
Financial needs
Emotional security
Spiritual leadership
Protection
Vision for the family
A godly husband works diligently to ensure his family lacks no essential thing.
5. THE LAW OF DEVELOPMENT
Key Scriptures: Proverbs 24:3-4; 2 Peter 3:18
God never intended marriage to remain stagnant.
Healthy marriages continually grow.
Growth should occur in:
Love
Communication
Faith
Wisdom
Finances
Parenting
Spiritual maturity
Every year a marriage should become stronger than the previous year.
Development requires:
Learning
Prayer
Forgiveness
Investment
Commitment
Anything that is not developing is dying.
Conclusion
Marriage succeeds when God's laws are honoured.
The five laws are:
1. Acceptance
2. Relationship
3. Obligation
4. Provision
5. Development
When these principles are consistently practised, marriage becomes a testimony of God's wisdom, love, and covenant faithfulness.
Closing Charge
Do not simply pray for a better marriage—practise God's principles for marriage. As husband and wife walk in obedience to God's Word, their home becomes a place of peace, purpose, growth, and God's abiding presence.
Closing Prayer
Father, thank You for instituting marriage. Help every husband and wife to accept Your design, deepen their relationship with You and with one another, faithfully fulfil their responsibilities, provide for their families according to Your grace, and continually grow in love and maturity. Let every marriage become a reflection of Christ's love for His Church. In Jesus' name, Amen.
