Over 1,500 illegal fishing gears have been confiscated in Salima and Mangochi from last year to date by beach Patrol officers.

This has been revealed in Salima today during the handover ceremony of a patrol boat, new data collection system and enforcement engines by the Restoring Fisheries for Sustainable Livelihoods in Malawi (REFRESH) project under the USAID.

Principal secretary in the ministry of Natural Resources Dr. Yusuf Mkungula said the development is commendable adding it has proven its effectiveness as the chambo species has increased by 10 percent from 3 percent in the past 5 years.

In his remarks project specialist for REFRESH Bruce Sosola stressed the need to adopt new and improved ways office recording data on Lake Malawi by phasing out manual data collection system.
