Craving sun, sand, and gluten-free eats that actually feel thoughtful? Port Dover might be the hidden gem you didn’t know you needed. From casual bites with safe swaps to sit-down meals where staff know exactly how to handle cross-contamination—and the must-visit Trish’s Bakery serving up incredible 100% gluten-free treats—this little Lake Erie town surprised us in all the best ways.
Trish's Bakery Cafe, located across from Powell Park, is a celiac's paradise. Trish and her team scratch-bake an amazing selection of sweet and savoury treats every day (except Sundays). The shelves and freezers are also well stocked with goodies from other celiac friendly produces like Annie's Seafood Restaurant. If you can, we suggest leaving work early so you don't miss Pizza Friday.
Need a break from the sun? The Mule Port Dover is the perfect spot for a bit of shade, a refreshing margarita and a quick lunch. The chef-inspired tacos and "definitely-not-tacos" are all prepared in a gluten-free and nut-free kitchen. We can't tell you how happy we were to have our first fish taco in years, knowing it was completely safe. If tacos aren't your thing, try the Bang Bang MFC... A bit of friendly advice: order two (one for you, and one for the table).
The Beach House is a great option for an apres-sun sit-down meal. Gluten-free items are clearly marked on the menu and offer a wide range of safe options.
Down an alley between Home Hardware and the Royal Bank is Port Dover's best celiac-friendly hidden gem. 4280 Pho and Gourmet Take-Out menu is small small, but it’s packed with Vietnamese staples that can easily be made gluten-free thanks to a few thoughtful substitutions. The bright, refreshing Crunchy Satay Peanut Salad shines when dressed with their house-made “Golden Sauce” (nuoc nam) instead of the satay dressing. Paired with a steaming bowl of rich and flavourful pho (just skip the hoisin), it made for a meal that was both comforting and safe.
Most people know Port Dover for its legendary Friday the 13th biker gatherings—but celiacs should know it for something else entirely. With Trish’s Bakery, The Mule, The Beach House, and 4280 Pho all offering safe, flavour-forward options, this beach town is just as memorable for what’s on the plate as what’s on the pier. For us, it’s become more than just a summer stop—it’s a gluten-free destination worth returning to.
