In 2014, Grand Mezcal was born from an untold story in Oaxaca, Southern Mexico. During one of his trips to support local communities, Dario, the founder, met one of the greatest “Maestro Mezcalero” (Master Distiller) of the region: “Don Tacho”. At that time, Mezcal did not benefit from the fame it enjoys today. Dario soon realized that Don Tacho and himself shared the same passion for Mezcal. Toge
ther, they decided to produce their first batch of the Mexican spirit which they named “La Escondida” (The hidden princess, inspired by a local legend). What we do? We produce small batches of hand-crafted Mezcal. We care deeply about every aspect related to the production process. In fact, in order to create our signature Grand Mezcal, we patiently wait between 7 to 10 years for the agaves to reach maturity to delicately extract them by hand and slowly roast them below ground. With the much appreciated help of Paco (our horse) and the tahona (Our stone wheel), we smash the roasted agaves into small bits. Natural fermentation takes place for approximately 5 days to finally being distilled twice in a copper alambique. We only use Local and sustainable products such as certified wood for the distillation, volcanic stones to heat the oven, and water from the natural sources. The result: A perfectly balanced Mezcal. Fruity on the nose and with a smooth smokiness at the end. You can sip it slowly or mix it in different ways. Where we are going? Today, we sell our product mainly in mainland Europe: Switzerland, France, Italy & Germany. While the demand for Mezcal is increasing, we are expanding cautiously in order to maintain the excellent quality of our spirit. As a matter of fact, we are committed to teach our clientele and consumers that a “Grand Mezcal” is more than just a simple spirit. It’s a tradition and part of the Mexican DNA. To reflect the quality and the commitment that has gone into the production process of our beverage, we aim to be part of the best establishments around the world. We work closely with creative and passionate people that share the same vision for La Escondida.
