Donají didn't grow up planning to make mezcal. She watched. She asked the questions nobody expected her to ask. And one day Eleuterio looked over and realized his daughter, the one beside him at the palenque, reading the maguey, watching the fire, was the one who'd carry all of it forward. He says it himself: she's his right hand now. A generation of women is stepping up to the palenque they weren't always invited to. Eleuterio knows what he's looking at when he looks at her. So do we.

Y un día Eleuterio volteó y se dio cuenta de que su hija, la que estaba a su lado en el palenque, leyendo el maguey, cuidando el fuego, era quien lo llevaría todo hacia adelante. Él mismo lo dice: ella es su mano derecha. Toda una generación de mujeres se acerca al palenque al que no siempre fueron invitadas. Eleuterio sabe lo que ve cuando la mira. Nosotros también.

When he was 12, his grandfather sat him down and told him something about this land, this plant, this family. He left anyway. Worked. Built a life somewhere else. But some things follow you no matter how far you go. In 2005, he came back to San Dionisio. Back to the palenque. Back to the roots.
