Private tasting. They were all noobs. Swore that bourbon was their jam. One hour later they were asking me to source some bottles for their bar. 💪🏽 😁

Finger-sized wooden blocks bake under flames of orange candles filling the air with eucalyptus.

Trippy spa music sets an unexpected mood.

Dead flower arrangements. Dead stuffed bobcats. Dead stuffed rabbits. Jesus candles of all sizes everywhere.

Bars on windows. Jesus on walls. Overlapping rugs on the floor. Ceiling panels from a bygone era.

Thin wooden shelves sag with no business holding heavy rows of heavy mezcal bottles.

Two bright white air conditioners peer through the orange darkness looking out of place.

Mezcal-themed post cards line the cluttered bar. A mailbox attached to the wall asserts an unbelievable promise that your card will arrive at your home someday with a long-forgotten note to self.

Customers enter in small batches bewildered by the small size of the space, the odd music, the unusual decor, the uncomfortable razor clam benches, the massage-envy smell, and the agave-only, neat-only menu offering.

Patrons carry with them wildly different understandings of mezcal but each receives the exact guidance they need to engage with the spirit where they are. And then they go away. As if “drink mezcal” was just a task to complete on a scavenger hunt.

Didn’t catch his name but a masterclass in patient bartending was on display.

The complimentary house-branded coyote with the bill was a killer touch. Like a mint with a bill but a billion times better.
