Nui Kopi has been hosting a casual monthly movie screening since January 2024 in our little space. Since then, we screened all genres and languages of films, mostly from overseas.
We realised that there are many good local films or documentaries produced by Malaysians. Most of them are unheard of or screened only during a special festivals or projects. As we aim to highlight these locally produced works, especially by Penangites, Nui organised our first special screening last year focusing on films made by Penangites or shot in Penang.
This year, we are back with Made in Penang screening with five productions shot in Penang and also directed by Penang-lang. The films will touch on neighbourhood issues as well as personal family stories.
The films are:
1) It Takes a Decade to Grow a Tree… (2015) by Okui Lala.
2) Behind the Blossom (2023) by Leaf Yeap.
3) The People of Weld Quay Reclamation Area (2025) by Ong Lin Pin.
4) Home at Rifle Range Flats (2025) by Tey Xin Mei.
5) Old Leaves: Story of My Ah Ma (2025) by Bernard Lim.
📅: 30 July, 2026, Thursday.
⏰: 8pm – 9.30pm (screening and Q&A)
🏠: Nui Kopi, Hin Bus Depot
Free entrance with a minimum order of one drink per person. There will be a Q&A session with some of the directors after screening.
We would like to record our gratitude and appreciation to the filmmakers for their support and willingness to share their works in Nui.
