How does a beach end up with 370kg of rubbish?
It is a question many of us quietly found ourselves asking last Saturday.
Not because the beach was neglected by those who care for it, but because every bottle, wrapper and piece of plastic had found its way there through countless small moments of carelessness. One at a time. Until, together, they became something much bigger.
That morning, more than 50 colleagues from SKS Group, SKS Hospitality, Four Points by Sheraton Desaru, SKS Mall Desaru and Majlis Perbandaran Pengerang gathered at Pantai Batu Layar, Desaru, for what was meant to be a simple beach clean-up.
It became something more.
As bags gradually filled with mostly discarded plastic bottles, conversations naturally shifted beyond the task itself. Many of us found ourselves wondering how often we walk past litter, assuming someone else will eventually deal with it. How easily we overlook the small choices that quietly shape the places we all share.
Perhaps that was the most valuable part of the morning.
Not the 370kg of waste we collected.
Not the photographs.
Not even the satisfaction of seeing a cleaner stretch of coastline.
It was the reminder that caring for our environment is rarely defined by one extraordinary effort. More often, it is reflected in the ordinary decisions we make every day.
The bottle we choose to recycle.
The rubbish we decide not to leave behind.
The willingness to pick up something that isn't ours simply because leaving it there didn't feel right.
At SKS Group, this beach clean-up is one of many ESG initiatives we continue to undertake, but we know meaningful change cannot belong to one organisation alone. It grows when communities, businesses, local authorities and individuals each play their part, however small it may seem.
If there is one hope we carry from that morning, it is not that others will applaud what we did.
It is that perhaps someone, somewhere, might pause before leaving a piece of rubbish behind. Or decide to pick one up.
Because protecting the places we love has never depended on a few people doing something extraordinary. But it depended on many people choosing to care.
