My Kampung Life

My Kampung Life Here's his journey flirting with the rural livelihood.

A curious guy and a passionate farmer-wannabe exploring life on a 2-acre permaculture farm in Malaysia, longing for a sustainable and alternative career in hopes of surpassing the mainstream economy.

A hammer in his hand, earth beneath their feet, and two small shadows learning what it means to stand tall.

This is how values are built—not in comfort, not in convenience, but in moments like these. Where little hands learn from calloused ones. Where patience is taught between each strike, and respect is earned from the soil up.

In a world that offers everything instantly, we choose to slow down. To grow our own food, to work with the land, to show them that nothing meaningful comes without effort. Because character isn’t taught with words—it’s lived, side by side.

One day, they won’t remember the ladder or the stake. But they will remember this feeling: of building, of belonging, of becoming.

And maybe, just maybe, that’s how we raise a generation that values honour over ease, purpose over comfort, and roots over shortcuts.

Durian trees are blooming in large numbers at the farm and the sheep are having a field day helping themselves on fallen durian flowers. Durian flowers are edible and used in Indonesian and Malaysian cuisine, often cooked with sambal belacan, though I have not tried it myself. I'm sure it's tasty just by the looks of the texture.

Harvesting the kelulut honey again after 2.5 months. My usual schedule is 2 months; the longer the better (lower moisture levels, well aged, higher trehalulose content). Unfortunately, I only got 3.5kg instead of my usual 5kg of raw honey. Expected more if not 5kg min as we have just come out of the wet season.

Upon closer inspection, one of the 10 logs are in a critical state as it's been attacked by termites, resulting in the colony working hard to prop up and seal their home from the inside out with propolis; keeping the invaders at bay. Another 2 logs were also just chugging along with some ants infestation on the outside due to leaks in the cover. Much to be done to rehab the logs.

I've also harvested the bee bread this round for personal consumption. The propolis left behind were used to plug the holes and gaps in the cottage floorboards. Great workout for my fingers. Wish I have a boat to waterproof it with...😅

All our honey is available for sale via FORUS Malaysia at TTDI Edible Community Garden.

Making a quick harvest of these long overdue turmeric. Each bed is permanently planted with 2 leucaena, one on each end which will be chopped and dropped (pollarded at 6 feet). Once harvested, the bare soil is covered with a mesh of leucaena twigs in hopes of deterring chickens who occasionally enter the area to forage. The sheep-dung fertilised beds have since been replanted again with turmeric. Curious to see how many times i can keep going with turmeric without seeing a drop in yield.

A long overdue stepping stone to a key development next year. A 200 sqf workshop and storage area for farm/construction materials, equipment and tools. This will also serve as a staging centre for the construction of another key facility next year.

While this structure is occupying a 200 sqf footprint, it's designed to have an effective and functional workspace of at least 500 sqf.

It's been almost 2 years since the last post and I had numerous enquiries and nudges asking "What's Up?". In a rather coincidental and timely reference to all things good and well; i.e. "Up", yes, it's been good albeit a rather challenging and steep terrain to manoeuvre in the past 2 years. Things are looking UP and rightfully so, a slow but steady progress.

Lots of things have been happening in the past 2 months, let alone 2 years! I will let these events unfold themselves in their most natural instance in the weeks ahead. Until then, suffice to say, things will be getting more interesting than ever.

I have been busy building downstream operations for the sale and distribution of sustainable farm produce. I have now a permanent farmers market and cafe setup at a community garden in TTDI KL. More on that later.
