Wine has taken a backseat to runner's high these days—not that there's much to raise a glass to. Then along came '13 Cannalicchio di Sopra Rosso di Montalcino. Modest, old-school on the face of it, but deeply evocative on a more visceral level. Reminds me why I fell in love with sangiovese in the first place: authenticity, the barnyard, the rustic theme with a sprezzatura twist. While the Biondi-Santis and Cepparellos of the world demand a lot from wine lovers, sangiovese at the entry level, crafted by the right hands, is the gift that keeps on giving.

Grandeur at full display.

Exhibit 1: Loke Chow Kit Mansion, aka Rumah Tangsi. One of KL's most striking heritage buildings. And eminently Instaworthy façade. Straits Eclectic style is how Gemini AI puts it, blending European neoclassical and Palladian aesthetics with Nanyang influence. Squint hard and you'll see the wee shadow of Villa la Rotonda. Or not.

Exhibit 2: Valdicava Vigna Montosoli. Memento from grand tasting months ago. Allegorical on the outside, aristocratic on the inside. The only sangiovese of that evening that wasn't afraid to embrace its 'barnyard' side, which in turn elevates this instant classic. Understandably cagey, though undeniably compelling.

Eccolì! The eagle has landed, or in this case Grifalco, a griffin/falcon hybrid: each the symbol of the Piccin family's hometown Montepulciano, Tuscany and of their adopted home since 2004, Monte Vulture in Basilicata respectively.

Grifalco is fast becoming a star producer in the deep south. Grown on the slopes of an extinct volcano, their exciting Aglianico del Vulture are racking up critical acclaim and regularly featured in prestigious wine shows. If you ask me, the Fivi stick man logo on the bottles is the quality indicator you need, more so than the wine's moniker 'Barolo of the South' (great sales pitch however).

Lowish alcohol level of these aglianico has certainly raised a few eyebrows. To quote many a Vinous tasting note, "Readers owe it to themselves to check these wines out." Time to head south!

Minimalist white label tells you all you need to know about its content: original, pure and transparent, yet full of character. For my money, this 100% sangiovese is the next iteration of Tenuta di Carleone winemaker, Sean 'Il Guercio' O'Callaghan's previous work at Riecine: Riecine di Riecine.

Likewise, the 'one-eyed rascal' (in every sense of the words) eschews Chianti Classico designation—all bar one—in favour of free rein in the cellar. His M.O. includes generous whole bunch, slow ferment, long maceration and concrete tank aging—nothing heavy-handed—with slight tweaks here and there depending on the hand he is dealt. The estate's high elevation vineyards go some way towards tempering the heat of a torrid growing season, including '22 vintage.

The outcome? Soulful, sensual sangiovese that speaks to the elegance and freshness of Lamole (blimey, not Radda). Sean urges patience, even if the wine is every bit as accessible as the man himself, whom I find wittily candid in sharing his quick take on the current state of affairs among his Radda peers and at former stomping ground, not to mention high regard for his neighbours. After customary viti-vinicultural insights of course.

Amusingly, I also find Il Guercio a breath of fresh air in the recently held : the rebel with a cause in a historic winegrowing region, yet the closest thing to a classic in the realm of lo-fi/natural wines.

*Throwback*

Che bella(o)! The beauty that stole my heart was naturally one I kept coming back for. A radiant, contemporary Chianti Classico, Volpaia '21 Coltassala ticks all the boxes.

PS: Great Wines World Asia grand tastings come and go. Last week however, I came away thinking, to quote Detective Murtaugh, "I'm too old for this sh*t." Sure, the first few were fun while they lasted. Too often what little wine in our big glass had to 'say' (most do not) was drowned out by noise and bustle of a couple thousands merrymakers in the room. Likewise any meaningful exchanges with winemakers/proprietors (outnumbered by commercial reps). Depending on who you ask, the whole experience feels less like a thoughtful engagement and more like an exercise to cross labels off one's bucket list (and an occasion to be seen). That's grand tasting for you.

There's something about 𝘮𝘢𝘤𝘪𝘨𝘯𝘰, the sandstones prevalent in the highest reaches of Radda on which —a proper village in itself—is perched. This '𝟭𝟮 𝗖𝗵𝗶𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗶 𝗖𝗹𝗮𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗼 𝗥𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗮 makes you salivate even before it touches your lips. Slender, sanguine and bittersweet, while the palate didn't quite live up to the tease on the nose, there's pleasure to be had. Solid. Love the label.
