Kuala Lumpur Cocktail Week The Inaugural KL Cocktail Week 24 to 30 April 2024

Welcome to the Entrepreneur Series — a 6-part collection of honest conversations with the founders, operators and visionaries shaping the future of hospitality across Asia.

In this episode, we step into the kitchen with Chef Aidan Low (Aidan Low) of one Michelin star restaurant, Akar Dining (akar), whose thoughtful approach to modern Malaysian cuisine has earned international recognition.

From training in Japan and France to returning home to redefine Malaysian dining, Aidan shares what it means to be both a chef and an entrepreneur. He reflects on balancing creativity with the realities of running a business, finding his own culinary voice, and what “modern Malaysian” truly means beyond the plate.

More than a story about food, this is a conversation about purpose and the discipline behind building something that transcends trends.

Welcome to the Entrepreneur Series — a 6-part collection of honest conversations with the founders, operators and visionaries shaping the future of hospitality across Asia.

In this episode, we sit down with someone carrying something most entrepreneurs have to build from scratch — a name that already means something. Meet Raymond Khue (.mondk.hue) — Creative Director of Oloiya (), Malaysia’s most beloved bak kwa brand, and a business that has been part of the Malaysian table since 1970.

Over five decades and three generations, Oloiya grew from a roadside stall into a household name across Malaysia and beyond. As one of the third generation of the Khue family to helm the business, Raymond knows that inheriting a legacy and sustaining one are two very different things.

In this episode, he opens up about honouring tradition without being trapped by it — and why preserving heritage is itself a form of innovation. Case in point: transforming their heritage Petaling Street space into a collaboration with .cabinet8.kl, bringing a 50-year-old brand face to face with an entirely new generation of customers.

Some people build empires. Others are trusted to keep them alive — and bold enough to reimagine them. This is that story.
