In Malaysia, the Winter Solstice also locally known as Dongzhi, is a beautiful example of how ancient traditions adapt to a tropical climate.

The highlight of Dongzhi in Malaysia is the making and eating of Tangyuan (glutinous rice balls).

The symbolism of tangyuan is their round shape represents reunion, harmony, and the completion of a cycle.

In Malaysian households, these are typically served in a warm syrup infused with pandan leaves and bentong ginger, giving the dish a distinctly local aroma.

While traditional white and pink are common, many families use natural dyes like blue pea flower or pandan to create a vibrant palette.

Malaysia doesn't experience a "true" winter, the focus shifts entirely to the "Shortest Day" as a marker for getting a year older. A common Chinese-Malaysian saying is that once you eat your Tangyuan, you are officially one year older and wiser.

Unlike the Lunar New Year, which is loud and public, Dongzhi is quiet and intimate. It’s a day for family gathering around a table to roll dough by hand, which the children immensely enjoyed.

The adults would offer prayers to ancestors to thank them for the year’s protection. At the end of the day, we share a hearty home-cooked meal with our loved ones.
