The Chetti Melaka people are descendants of Tamil and Telugu traders from South India who settled in the port city of Melaka during the 15th century. They intermarried with native women, creating a distinct cultural identity. The Chetti Melaka community played a vital role in the region's trading network, engaging in commerce and acting as intermediaries between Indian, Malay, Kristang , Baba Nyonya and Chinese communities. They preserved their Indian roots while adopting local customs, language, and traditions.
