Kiara Cakes, Subang

[Pork-free] Previously operating in Mont Kiara, Kiara Cakes has moved to its new location in SS19, Subang Jaya.

Known for its customisable whole cakes, Kiara Cakes also offer hot dishes from the kitchen and coffee beans from Elo Coffee Roasters.

The Butter Tteok (RM8 per pair) here is well-made - retaining its crispy exterior and chewy mochi centre. It’s a perfect pair with the Filthy Coffee (RM13).

For something more substantial, the Authentic Hainanese Chicken Chop (RM28) features a juicy chicken leg that’s perfectly breaded and fried, and topped with savoury brown sauce. The Quarter Roast Chicken (RM26) comes with vegetables and a similar brown sauce on the side.

🚨 THE BEST RAMEN WE HAD IN TOKYO! 🦐👇

[Pork-free] We found our favorite ramen of the trip at Ebimaru Ramen in Jimbōchō!

This isn’t your average ramen spot - head chef Masa is trained in French fine dining and fuses French culinary techniques with Japanese comfort food. 🇫🇷🇯🇵🔥

The Secret? They simmer whole Canadian lobsters, shells, and chicken for 15 hours with brandy, wine, and a vegetable mirepoix.

The result? A lobster bisque broth so rich, creamy, and packed with umami it will blow your mind. 🤯🍜

What we got: The Sparkling Wine Set (approx. ¥2,340) which comes with:
1️⃣ A shot of tomato-lobster broth amuse-bouche
2️⃣ The iconic Lobster Ramen (thick al dente noodles, tender chicken, and a baguette with sour cream!)
3️⃣ A glass of crisp sparkling wine 🥂⚠️

PRO-TIP: DO NOT FINISH THE BROTH! Save a few spoonfuls for the grand finale. They bring out a sizzling hot iron pan with rice, prawns, and egg yolk, then shave fresh cheese right at your table to create a rich, gooey lobster risotto. 🧀🔥

If you are a foodie traveling to Tokyo, save this post right now. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 🌟

[Pork-free] We love soba.

It is always customary that we start our first proper meal in Japan with soba. And preferably - one that’s off the beaten “tourist” track, and away from busy nodes of central Tokyo.

For this excursion, our research brought us to
Muromachi Sunaba 室町 砂場 in Nihonbashi.

Trust Tablelog for recommendations and follow the pinstripe suits at lunch-time for a good meal.

Muromachi Sunaba’s history dates back to the Meiji Restoration era in 1869. The Nihonbashi shop originally operated in Takanawa before moving to Nihonbashi, which remains a merchant food district today.

The soba’s history here goes further to the Edo period - as it is a direct lineage to the famous Sunaba 砂場 shop located near Osaka Castle.

The restaurant is known for creating “Ten-zaru” and “Ten-mori” soba - cold soba served with a warm dipping sauce containing tempura kakiage.

We tried both soba offerings here:

The Mori soba is probably what most are familiar with - rustic nutty flavours with a stronger buckwheat aroma. Which is our top pick usually, and it was the same here. Great firm texture and nutty flavour.

The Zaru soba was a new experience for us. It’s was smoother and more refined, as it was made with only the finest white kernel of buckwheat and egg. This is more distinctive of the classic Edo soba tradition.

The accompanying dipping sauce is served with prawn-clam-vegetable kakiage inside. Dipping sauce is savoury and yet delicate. We also recommend ordering the high-grade seaweed to wrap the noodles and dip with soy sauce, and seasonal vegetables in light dashi sauce.

Seasonal Japanese vegetables are delicious!

Of course - sobaya (water used to cook soba) is also served here to enjoy the remainder dipping sauce as a soup.

TL;DR version: Rustic Edo-style soba with direct lineage to Sunaba in Osaka. Get both the Zaru and Mori soba.

🍝 Basil Pasta House, Kuchai Lama

[Non-halal] Basil Pasta House remains a solid spot for hearty, pork-centric Italian dishes.

It’s been years since we’ve been here - and we were pleased to find that they still delivered on portion, price and taste. The menu is also one of the more extensive ones in town.

We tried the Pork Bolognese (RM32.90) - rich, meaty and packed with bacon bits, balanced with just enough tomato acidity. The Vongole (RM28.90) was buttery, briny and equally satisfying. Both pasta dishes were served perfectly al dente.

Generous portions, reasonable prices, and still worth the queue during peak hours.

[Muslim-owned] We’ve been on the hunt for a good beef burger in town - and Bangers recently popped up on our radar.

Bonus point: it’s located near our home in Ara Damansara.

After sharing a photo of the burger on our personal IG, we received quite a number of enquiries - so here it is.

Bangers is an offshoot of Born Butcher, located just around the corner and best known for its beef brisket and bangers. This outlet takes on a more casual concept, with burgers and fried chicken as the main focus.

The Wagyu Beef Burger (RM30) hits the mark for us. The patty is thick, well-seasoned, and juicy. We’re not fans of undercooked burgers, but Bangers gets it right - retaining just a slight hint of pink while keeping the texture spot on.

The cheddar, onions, and sauce come together nicely, while the buns are soft and pillowy - holding everything together without getting in the way.

For an additional RM5, you can upgrade the meal to include unlimited lemonade and fries. The fries are freshly cooked, thick-cut with the skin on - just the way we like them.
