Sungai Ara (新港, Hokkien: Sinkang) is named after the river that flows through the neighbourhood from it's hilly areas. It was formally an agricultural area before it slowly developed into a residential township in the late 20th century.
While there are abundance of food stalls in this neighbourhood, we'd like to focus on a particular stall that sells Chinese fried delicacies. Here you can find a range of fried desserts available such as jian dui, 煎堆 (fried sesame balls) with red bean paste, lotus paste or peanut filling and even their version of liu sha bao, 流沙包 (salted egg custard bao) which instead of using the traditional bao buns, they use sandwich bread with the liu sha filling and the sandwich is deep fried. Our personal favourite, is their deep fried orh nee pastry - the filling is a thick and sweet taro paste.
Aside from their sweet yummy desserts, you can also find savoury items such as their chicken char siew bao (which we highly recommend as the filling is so creamy!), wu kok (芋角, taro dumpling/croquette with meat), ham sui kok (咸水角, fried glutinous rice dumpling) and also deep fried tuna sandwiches.
The stall is located at corner junction right opposite Ah Niu Wan Tan Mee, usually next to Sungai Ara Yeong's Soya truck. They're open daily (except Wednesdays) from 12.30pm till 5.30pm or until sold out. On Wednesdays you can find them at the Air Itam Night Market.
