🌿 Meet the Red Hartebeest! 🌿

The red hartebeest (Alcelaphus buselaphus caama), also known as the Cape hartebeest or Caama, is a stunning antelope found in Southern Africa. With its striking black markings and white abdomen, it’s the most colorful member of the hartebeest family.

Red hartebeests are known for their excellent sense of hearing and smell, although their sight isn’t as sharp. When alarmed, they flee in a zigzag pattern.

Namibia is home to the magnificent white rhino. Did you know that white rhinos were nearly extinct? Thanks to the dedication of southern Africa's private wildlife owners, they increased in numbers again. Yet, the fight is far from over. Poaching continues to take a heavy toll, and private conservationists carry the burden of keeping rhinos safe... often with little external support.

The rock monitor, in Afrikaans called Likkewaan, is one of Africa's largest lizards. Did you know they can reach up to two meters in length?

These reptiles feast on anything they can find, from insects and eggs to small mammals. Their strong claws and powerful tails make them formidable hunters.

Spotting one of these guys is always a thrill, it reminds us that the Kalahari is full of surprises!

We are busy cutting and baling grass along our roads. This is not only useful as fodder for the dry season, but it also serves a critical purpose: fire breaks.

In Namibia’s dry months, veld fires can spread rapidly across farms and reserves. A wide, clean road acts as a barrier, slowing down or even stopping the flames. The wider the road, the better our chance to contain a fire.

When you join Johan Kotze Hunting Safaris, you are not just exploring the Kalahari… you will be meeting some of its most remarkable residents. One of them is the ostrich! 🪶

The ostrich is the largest bird on earth. They cannot fly, but they are built for speed instead; reaching up to 70 km/h! The males have impressive black and white colours to impress the females. The females are more of a greyish colour.
