Yesterday, something happened to me that reminded me why integrity matters in business.
I went to deliver some of tomatoes to a customer. Unknown to her, she had mistakenly made a double payment.
However, I saw a singular alert, and drove off, thinking business was successfully concluded.
Later that evening, while checking my transaction history, I noticed the duplicate payment.
I called her immediately and explained what had happened. She was surprised because she hadn't even noticed the mistake herself.
She sent her account details, and I refunded the extra money.
This morning, she called again just to thank me.
That got me thinking…
She probably realised that genuine people are still out there.
But for me, it was never really about the ₦75,000.
As I told my business partner, “We still have countless businesses to do with this woman. I can't jeopardize that relationship for ₦75,000.”
Even if she didn't discover the mistake today, she would have eventually. And beyond business, my Christian values wouldn't allow me to knowingly keep money that wasn't mine.
Business owners, don't just build a business. Build . Build . Build .
One act of integrity can turn one customer into many more.
Your reputation is part of your business capital. Don't jeopardize it for a temporary gain.
Integrity matters.
