General Pond Preparation Tips for Stocking Fingerlings or Juvenile Catfish

Proper pond preparation is essential for the healthy growth and survival of catfish. These steps apply to all pond types, including earthen ponds, concrete ponds, tarpaulin ponds, and plastic tanks.
1. Clean and Disinfect the Pond
 New Ponds: Wash thoroughly with salt solution or potassium permanganate to remove chemicals and toxins.
 Old Ponds: Drain completely and scrub to remove slime, algae, and organic debris.
 Earthen Ponds: Expose to sunlight for 7–14 days to kill harmful organisms.
2. Remove Predators and Harmful Organisms
 Check for frogs, insects, snakes, and unwanted fish.
 Apply tea seed cake (for earthen ponds) to kill predatory fish before stocking.
3. Repair and Secure the Pond
 Concrete and Tarpaulin Ponds: Check for cracks or leaks and repair them.
 Earthen Ponds: Strengthen embankments to prevent erosion.
 Ensure inlet and outlet pipes have fine mesh screens to prevent escape or entry of unwanted species.
4. Adjust Water Quality
 Fill with fresh, chlorine-free water. If using tap water, let it sit for 24–48 hours.
 Ideal water depth:
 Earthen Pond: 1–1.5 meters
 Concrete/Tarpaulin/Plastic Pond: 0.8–1.2 meters
 Maintain pH between 6.5–8.5 and dissolved oxygen above 5 mg/L.
5. Apply Lime (For Earthen Ponds Only, If Needed)
If the soil is acidic (pH below 6), apply agricultural lime (200–500 kg per hectare) to neutralize acidity.
6. Fertilization for Natural Food (Optional for Earthen Ponds)
 Apply organic manure (e.g., chicken droppings) or inorganic fertilizers (e.g., NPK 15:15:15) to boost natural plankton growth.
 Let the pond sit for 5–7 days before stocking fish.
7. Acclimatize the Fingerlings
 Place the fingerlings in their transportation bag inside the pond water for 15–30 minutes to adjust to the water temperature.
 Gradually release the fish to avoid stress and shock.
8. Maintain and Monitor the Pond
 Check water quality

Factors to Consider in Selecting Catfish Species
Great Nigerian Farmers,
This is Rahym Agro Allied, your trusted partner in thriving and sustainable agriculture. Today, we are excited to showcase the process of producing healthy fingerlings of Clarias gariepinus, also known as African catfish, the cornerstone of catfish farming in Nigeria.
Remember that selecting the right species is critical for your farming success. Clarias gariepinus stands out as the most popular choice in Nigeria for good reasons:
1. Market Demand: This species is highly sought after for local consumption and smoked catfish production, ensuring a steady market for your harvests.
2. Fast Growth: With proper care, African catfish fingerlings grow to market size in just 4–6 months, allowing quick harvests and faster returns.
3. Resilience: African catfish are tough, thriving in diverse farming systems like ponds, tanks, and even in challenging water conditions.
4. Disease Resistance: These fish have strong immunity, reducing losses and minimizing costs for treatments.
