WATER QUALITY IN FISH FARMING
"The Hidden Secret Behind Successful Fish Farming"
Many fish farmers focus on stocking density, feed, and fingerlings quality but forget the most important factor that determines whether fish will grow well or die suddenly "WATER QUALITY"
Fish live, breathe, and feed in water. When the water quality is poor, the fish become stressed, grow slowly, stop feeding, and may eventually die.
Here are some key water quality factors every fish farmer should monitor:
1️⃣ Dissolved Oxygen (DO)
Fish need oxygen in the water to survive. When oxygen levels are low, fish may gasp at the surface. This often happens early in the morning or when ponds are overcrowded. Gasping is an indicator that the dissolved oxygen is low in the water.
2️⃣ Ammonia Build-up
Ammonia comes from fish waste and uneaten feed. High ammonia levels are toxic and can damage fish gills, reduce growth, and cause mortality.
3️⃣ Water Colour
Healthy pond water usually appears light green. If the water becomes too dark, brown, or black, it is an indication of poor water conditions.
4️⃣ Overfeeding
Uneaten feed decomposes in water and reduces water quality. Always feed according to the size and number of fish in your pond.
5️⃣ Poor Water Exchange
Regular water exchange helps remove waste and maintain a healthy environment for fish. For water exchange, you can either use a Flow Through System (FTS) or Water Recirculatory System (WRS)
💡 Simple Tips to Maintain Good Water Quality
• Avoid overfeeding
• Remove leftover feed and wastes
•Monitor fish behaviour regularly
• Change water periodically
•Maintain proper stocking levels
Healthy water means healthy fish, faster growth, and better profit.
