CATFISH FARMING MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES

CATFISH FARMING DISEASE CONTROL 2.

Parasitic diseases are caused by protozoa, helminthes and parasitic crustaceae.

Non-communicable diseases include nutritional fish diseases (e.g. goiter or hyperplasia of the thyroid gland), diseases associated with physical or physio-chemical abnormalities of water e.g. gas bubble disease which is due to super saturation of water with nitrogen or oxygen, low temperature disease and diseases caused by waterborne irritants e.g. cement, dust, silt, ammonia etc.

Disease of unknown aetiology include diseases for which the causative agents have not been identified e.g. proliferative kidney diseases and ulcerative dermal necrosis.

Treatment of fish is always a dangerous undertaking and every possible precaution must be taken to avoid disastrous results. Unlike the physician or veterinarian who treats patients on an individual basis under carefully controlled conditions and with accurate dosages, the farmer must treat his fishes en masse and trust the law of average will work in his favour.

Prevention rather than treatment should be the goal of every fish culturist. Most problems develop or become serious simply because of poor management or inattention on the part of the fish culturist. Some disease preventive measures include:

Use water that is free of wild fish e.g. spring or well water
Use good quality water without pollutants
If water is from streams or lakes, sand-gravel filters can be installed to prevent wild fish and most parasites
Avoid introduction of fish from other hatcheries, where this is impossible, obtain fish from hatchery without history of serious disease problems. Treatment against ectoparasites prior to stocking is advisable

There you go, be vigilant please.

Extension tips of the day on fish and fisheries.
Start considering this today fam

Step 1: Purchase of Catfish Juvenile

Cost of one (1) fish = N30

Cost of 1000 fishes = Number of fishes X Amount per fish

That is 1000 x N30 = N30, 000.

Step 2: Feeding plan for 6months

It takes about 1kg feed for a catfish to gain 1kg weight

Therefore, 1 catfish = 1kg feed

Your 1000 fish will consume 1000kg feed

1000 fish = 1kg x 1000kg

1000 fish = 1000kg feed

Now let’s see the cost of feed in Nigerian market so as to get our calculation right.

1 bag of fish feed is sold for N10, 500

1 bag is measured at 15kg

No of bags to 1000 fish = 1000/15 = 67 bags

The total number of bags to feed 1000 fish to gain a kg weight is 67 bags.

1 bag = N10, 500

The total amount of feed = Amount per bag X Number of bags

N10, 500 x 67bags = N703, 500

Therefore, the total amount to be spent on fish feed for the next 6months will be N703, 500

I would have stopped here but let me show you other things to record as you progress excluding pond construction. My calculation here will help your understanding into fish farming business as regards feeding and your profit.

Other Expenditures.
Amount of petrol per month = N10, 000

For 6month will be N10, 000 x 6 = N60, 000

Transportation = N25, 000

Total expenditure = Amount spent on feed + fuel+ transportation

N703, 500 + N60, 000 + N25, 000

= N788, 500

At this stage, you already know what you are looking at when you want to start fish farming with 1000 fingerlings or juveniles.

Before I wrap up, let me show you the possible income to be expected if the other stages are done right.

Step 3: Sales

Number of fishes stocked = 1000

Possible number of fish left = 900 (in case of loses)

Average cost of 1kg fish = N2,500

Total number of fishes sold X price per fish

900 fishes x N2,500 = N2,250, 000

Profit
Profit = Sale – Expenditure

N2,250, 000 – N788, 500

= N1,461, 500
There you go.

TOP 6 FARMING MANAGEMENT SECRETS

How you manage your farm is very important if you really want to prosper through farming, If you can manage your farm well, you can make a success of farming.

By virtue of my assighnment, I move around a lot and I have spoken with so many farmers – both the successful and the struggling ones. The difference most of the time is the management patterns.
Below are the time tested, often neglected top management secrets that I uncovered for you to get it right in farming and probably keep smiling to the bank:

1. ALWAYS ENSURE A CLEAN SOURCE OF WATER.
Water is life for your livestock and poultry. As a matter of fact, no water, no farming! Your farm animals must drink water on daily basis. Most of the time, the troubles of farm animals come from unclean water source. You must get the water issue right by all means. Do nothing else in farming until you get this right! Water should be tested for its PH and existence of bacteria, atleast twice a year.
The water you can't drink don't give it to your birds

2. NEVER TOLERATE DIRTY FARM WORKERS
A smart farmer will always seek to bloc any avenue of troubles for his or her flock. Most of the time the problems are form the working hands. Some of them are very dirty! Check this out. A dirty farm assistant will be a real reservoir of germs and other disease agents. Tell them to change and if they refuse, fire them. It's the farmer's responsibility to provide atleast 2 pairs of overall and gumboots to every worker. The worker will ensure the attire is kept clean.
You do not have to go to school to learn this! One worker the health of the flock starts with the attendants person cleanliness

3. BE A RECORD KEEPING FANATIC.
Do all you can to keep accurate records on a constant basis. By doing this, you will know the state of things and adjust accordingly. Get good records keeping formats from established farmers and start using it. Refuse to do things in haphazard manners. I knew I was weak at this,
You can't evaluate what you didn't record 👌

4. BIOSECURITY
Many farms take biosecurity very light and yet if not handled well it can increase input costs by 70%
Proper biosecurity reduces chance of disease out brake and increase the health state of your flock hence perfect production
Ensure protective wares like overalls and gumboots to both farm workers and visitors
Spray allover the body and vehicle to prevent any entry of disease causing organisms

Foot bath should all be at the entrances and remember to select a good disinfectant that has a long contact time which can spend more time after being mixed

5. DIAGNOSE AND TREAT DISEASE CASES PROMPTLY
Whether you like it or not, trouble times will come during farming operations. Some of your flock or animals may start showing signs of sickness. Do not panic but face reality. Do whatever you can to solve the problem fast. A stitch in time save nine. Get your vet and cooperate together to nip the problems in the birds. Remember, it is always cheaper and better to prevent than to cure. Has your vet helped you to teach your workers the farm dos and don'ts? Or has he helped to set biosecurity standards for your farm?

6. AVOID ANY FORM OF WASTE AND DO AWAY WITH THIEVES.
Waste in any form can cripple your farming business. Spend time to look critically at your present operations. See if there is a particular area where you tend to waste money or other resources and block it fast. Thieves are great menace to your success in farming. Learn to deal with them ruthlessly. People come people go, don’t be sentimental about this. If a farm worker is an unrepentant thief, sack him or her and move on!
One cage farm in entebbe collects all spoilt feed from the cage lines and weights it, then deducts the money from the worker's salary who is responsible for pouring that feed.

7. BE A GOAL SETTER.
You can’t arrive at a destination you don’t plan for. A wise farmer is a goal setter. Goal setting is a great management secret.
Set goals for your operations.
Set profit goals.
Set production goals.
We are all goal striving beings. When you set goals and you are determined, unseen forces will surround you to make it a reality. Write your goals down at least 2 times every week.
Put your goals in a 3x5 cards and carry it about in your pocket. Review your goals every night and every morning. Think about your goals all the time. Pray about your goals! You will be surprised at the results you get.
These are the six top farm management secrets.
