Earlier this week, I personally delivered one of our premium aqua-products—Common Carp Juveniles, to one of our esteemed clients in Agege, Lagos State.

Beyond the delivery 🚚, my primary purpose was to carry out a follow-up consultancy visit to ensure that everything on the farm was in proper order for the successful culture of multiple fish species 🐠.

I deem it necessary to address this season once again.

The rainfall this year has been exceptionally torrential and voluminous. There have been numerous cases of devastating floods ravaging fish farms across Nigeria, causing many fish farmers to lose their hard-earned investments.

Yesterday, I came across a heartbreaking report that a severe flood ravaged Ondo Town in Ondo State. Honestly, I have never heard of such a devastating flood occurring in Ondo Town before. The situation is truly alarming.

For many fish farmers, the rainy season is either a season of abundant harvest or painful losses. While rain naturally improves water availability and lowers water temperature, it also introduces several management challenges that can threaten fish health, reduce growth, and even wipe out an entire production cycle.

The difference between successful farmers and struggling ones is not the rain itself, but how they manage their farms during the season.

Here are practical ways every fish farmer should engage this rainy season....

1. MONITOR WATER QUALITY CONSISTENTLY

Rainwater alters the chemistry of pond water by diluting minerals and changing pH levels. Test your water regularly for pH, dissolved oxygen, ammonia, and temperature. Healthy water is the foundation of profitable fish farming. Also check for signs that indicate water is not in a good state.

2. REDUCE FEEDING DURING HEAVY RAINFALL

Fish become less active during heavy rainfall and consume less feed. Metabolism reduces due to cold weather. Feeding excessively during this period leads to wasted feed, poor water quality, and unnecessary financial losses. Resume normal feeding when the fish become active again.

3. IMPROVE POND DRAINAGE

Cloudy weather reduces photosynthesis by aquatic plants and algae, which may lower dissolved oxygen levels. Where possible, use aerators or increase water circulation, especially in high-density production systems.

For many years, there has been an age-long comparison between Clarias and Hybrid among fish farmers in Nigeria. Debates over which species grows faster, survives better, converts feed more efficiently, or delivers greater profitability have shaped stocking decisions on countless farms.

Actually, Hybrid Catfish (Hetero-claresse) is a cross between Pure Clarias gariepinus and Pure Heterobranchus species (either Heterobranchus bidorsalis or Heterobranchus longifilis). The aim of this crossbreeding is to combine the desirable characteristics of both parent species into one commercially valuable strain.

Unfortunately, one long-standing misconception has followed Hybrid Catfish: that it is not suitable for "melange" (smoking-size) production.

This belief largely stems from the observation that Hybrid Catfish generally does not exhibit the explosive early growth that Clarias often shows during the first two to three months of culture. As a result, many farmers prematurely conclude that Hybrid is slower-growing and therefore unsuitable for profitable smoking-fish production.

That conclusion is not entirely true.

Through my personal observations, practical farm experience, and continuous advocacy, I have deliberately worked to challenge this misconception. Today, many commercial fish farmers who once avoided Hybrid for melange production have discovered that it is, in fact, an excellent choice.

Why?

Firstly, fish farming is a marathon, not a 90-day sprint. While Clarias may appear to gain an early advantage during the first few months, Hybrid Catfish continues to grow consistently and efficiently, eventually producing impressive harvest weights under proper management.

Secondly, Hybrid converts feed efficiently into flesh, resulting in excellent body conformation and higher edible yield at processing. Profitability is determined not only by how quickly a fish grows, but also by how much marketable flesh it produces.

Thirdly, Hybrid retains body weight better before and after harvest, making it highly valuable for processors and live fish marketers. For melange production, this translates into more saleable product and improved economic returns.

One of the most remarkable qualities of Hybrid Catfish (Hetero-clarias) is its ruggedness and high level of disease resistance.

When raised under good management practices, Hybrid Catfish generally exhibits strong resilience to common production stresses, including fluctuations in water quality, handling, grading, and transportation.
