New week, new eggs 🐔🥚
Monday check-in from the backyard:
- Waterers scrubbed ✅
- Feed topped up ✅
- Coops checked for snakes/rats ✅

This week’s goal: keep them cool and hydrated. I drop frozen watermelon for my birds by noon. What’s your go-to heat trick?

FAT BURNING IN LAYERS WITH APPLE CIDER VINEGAR.

Many farmers do use apple cider vinegar (ACV) in layers, and there’s research backing it for reducing fat, especially abdominal and liver fat.

How ACV helps with fat in layers.

ACV isn’t a fat burner like in human diet culture, but it shifts metabolism:

1. Reduces abdominal fat: Broilers given ACV had significantly lower abdominal fat % vs control. Acetic acid inhibits glycolysis and stimulates glycogenesis, so less fat gets stored.

2. Liver protection: In high-fat diets, ACV reduced liver fat vacuoles, lowered triglycerides, cholesterol, and it makes triglycerides, and upregulated _Hsl_ for fat breakdown.

3. Fatty liver prevention: In mice and rats, ACV/ACV powder reversed hepatic steatosis, cut liver weight, and normalized ALT/AST.

4. Better FCR + performance: Layers/broilers on ACV had higher weight gain, better gut histomorphology, and improved carcass yield.

For layers specifically, excess fat causes "fatty liver hemorrhagic syndrome" and drops egg production. ACV helps by lowering lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in the liver.

Dosage:

Age/Stage: Chicks 1-5 weeks
Dosage: 5 ml ACV per 1 litre water
Frequency: 0.5%
Notes: 2-3x per week Use raw, unfiltered ACV "with mother"

Age/Stage: Growers 6-18 weeks
Dosage: 10 ml per 1 litre
Frequency: 1%
Notes: 2-3x per week Increase as they age.

Age/Stage: Adult layers
Dosage: 5-6 ml per 2 litres of water OR 20 ml per litre.
Frequency: 2%
Notes: 1 week per month or 2-3x per week Don’t give daily.

Rules for using ACV safely

1. Use raw, unfiltered ACV with "mother"- contains beneficial bacteria/proteins. Bragg is a common brand.

2. Plastic drinkers only - ACV corrodes metal/galvanized drinkers.

3. Don’t overuse: Too much causes mouth burns, upset digestion, and pH imbalance. Stick to 2-3x per week.

4. Don’t mix with medications - ACV can interfere with antibiotics, coccidiostats like amprolium.

5. Give plain water too- Always offer fresh plain water alongside ACV water.

6. Skip if birds have gut irritation- Vinegar shouldn’t be used if intestines are already inflamed.

What to expect

- Less abdominal fat at slaughter
- Lower triglycerides in meat
- Better liver function and less risk of fatty liver syndrome
- Improved immunity and gut health.

Important: ACV helps prevent fat buildup, but it won’t fix a poor diet. If your layers are overweight, also check:
1. Energy level in feed - too much maize/energy causes fatty liver
2. Feed restriction if birds are too heavy
