Adaeze sold roasted corn under the hot sun just to send her younger sister, Chioma, to school.
When their parents died, she became both mother and father to Chioma.
She denied herself happiness so her sister could have a better future.
At twenty-nine, Adaeze finally married Emeka, the love of her life. Their marriage was beautiful, but after six years without a child, everything changed.
Emeka's mother accused Adaeze of bringing bad luck into the family.
Neighbors mocked her.
Church members whispered behind her back.
But through it all, Chioma stood by her.
Or so she thought.
One day, Chioma lost her job and moved into their house.
Suddenly, Emeka became happier than usual.
He bought gifts.
He smiled more.
He stayed up late talking with Chioma.
Whenever Adaeze questioned them, they laughed it off.
"Sister, you worry too much," Chioma would say.
One rainy evening, Adaeze returned home earlier than expected.
The lights in the bedroom were off.
She heard strange laughter from the guest room.
Her heart began to race.
As she opened the door, the world around her stopped.
Emeka and Chioma were lying on the same bed.
Half-dressed.
Chioma quickly covered herself.
Emeka jumped up in fear.
But what broke Adaeze wasn't what she saw.
It was what she heard.
Chioma looked at her elder sister and said,
"He's mine now. At least I can give him children."
Adaeze collapsed on the floor crying.
But the greatest shock came three months later.
Emeka called a family meeting and announced:
"I have married Chioma traditionally. She's carrying my child."
The room exploded in confusion.
And as Adaeze sat there in tears, she had no idea that years later, fate would return with a debt nobody expectedβ¦
