OFFICIAL STATEMENT FROM CALABAR RETAILMENT CENTRE
23rd August 2026
Calabar Retailment Centre confirms that a fire incident occurred at the Calabar Mall in the early hours of Saturday, 22nd August.
The fire was brought under control, and we are deeply grateful that there was no loss of life and no injuries have been reported.
We empathize deeply with the affected tenants who have lost valuable property as a result of the incident.
Our immediate priority throughout the incident was the safety of our customers, tenants, employees, and the surrounding community.
We sincerely appreciate the Cross River State Government, emergency response services, security personnel, our employees, tenants, and all those who responded promptly and supported efforts to bring the situation under control. We are particularly grateful for the timely support and cooperation extended by the relevant State Government authorities during the incident and in the period immediately thereafter.
A full assessment of the affected area is now underway. We are working closely with the relevant authorities and other concerned parties to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident and to ensure that all necessary safety reviews and actions are completed. As part of this process, the mall will remain temporarily closed while the necessary assessments and safety reviews are carried out. We will provide further updates regarding the reopening of the mall as appropriate.
We thank our customers, employees, partners, the Cross River State Government, and the Calabar community for their concern, support, and understanding.
