Geophagia is the intentional practice of eating earth, soil, or clay. It is a form of pica, most commonly seen in pregnant women, children, and traditional or rural communities.

Causes and Reasons

Nutritional deficiencies: Often linked to low iron levels (anemia) or a craving for missing minerals.

Pregnancy: Frequently tied to morning sickness relief or hormonal shifts.

Cultural traditions: Followed as a regional custom, local remedy, or dietary habit using specific clays like nzu or kaolin.

Health Risks

Mineral blocking: Clay binds to nutrients in the gut, worsening iron, zinc, or potassium deficiencies.

Toxic exposure: Dirt can contain heavy metals like lead.

Parasites: Ingestion of contaminated soil risks severe worm infections and intestinal blockages.

What is MSG and why you should avoid it.

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate) is a flavor enhancer naturally derived from the amino acid glutamic acid. It is added to foods to boost umami—a savory, meaty flavor. It contains only a third of the sodium of table salt and is commonly found in instant noodles, processed meats, and restaurant dishes.
Health organizations worldwide, including the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), classify MSG as generally recognized as safe (GRAS).

The Facts vs. The Myth

The "Chinese Restaurant Syndrome": In the 1960s, rumors spread that MSG caused headaches and flushing. However, rigorous scientific studies have debunked this, and health authorities no longer support the claim.

Natural Presence: The exact same glutamate found in packaged MSG occurs naturally in everyday foods like tomatoes, mushrooms, cheese, and soy sauce.Sensitivities: A tiny fraction of people may experience mild, temporary reactions (like flushing or headaches) if they consume very large amounts of MSG.

Where You'll Find It:

Because it adds deep savory notes and helps reduce overall sodium, you will often spot it in:

Seasoning blends and flavor packets

Canned soups and broths

Fast food and savory snacks (like chips and frozen meals)

Packaged and cured deli meats

Unripe Plantain - Nutritional Summary*

Unripe plantain is basically a "starchy vegetable" vs ripe plantain which is more sugary. It’s a staple across West Africa including Nigeria.

Key nutrients per 100g of boiled unripe plantain
- Calories: ∼120-130 kcal — mostly from complex carbs

- Carbs: ∼31g. High in resistant starch, which acts like fiber

- Protein: ∼1.3g

- Fat: ∼0.4g — very low

- Fiber: ∼2.3g. Good for digestion and gut health

Vitamins & Minerals
- Potassium: High — helps blood pressure and muscle function
- Vitamin A, C, B6: Supports immunity and energy
- Magnesium, Iron: Important for blood and nerve function
- Antioxidants: Like tannins and phenols — help fight inflammation

Health benefits
1. Low sugar, low glycemic: Because it’s unripe, sugar content is low. Better for blood sugar control vs ripe plantain.
2. Gut health: The resistant starch feeds good gut bacteria and can help with constipation, ulcers, and diarrhea.
3. Weight management: High fiber + complex carbs keep you full longer.
4. Heart health: Potassium + low fat + no cholesterol.

Common uses
Boiled, roasted "boli", pounded into fufu, or dried and ground into plantain flour for diabetics/low-sugar diets.

Note: Because it’s high in starch, it can cause bloating for some people if you eat a lot at once.
