Sometimes what we love to call an excellent spirit.... working harder than everyone else. Never turning in anything less than perfect. Staying up until the job is flawless, might actually be performance addiction.
Excellence flows from identity. Addiction flows from a need that never gets satisfied. One says "I want to honor God with my best." The other says "if I stop achieving, people would think I am failing."
The difference is not in the outcome. Both can look identical from the outside. The difference is in what happens when you rest. Excellence lets you stop and feel at rest. Addiction makes stopping feel like failure or inadequacy.
True excellence flows from abiding in the vine (Christ), and as his life flows through us, we produce fruits of excellence. Performance Addiction produces results from striving hard and from burnout, in a bid to set or keep a standard and to remain successful.
If you cannot remember the last time you did something without needing it to be impressive... that might be performance addiction disguised as excellence.
You do not need to perform for an approval you already have from God.
